Recovery Point Bolts

Folkses,

I am stuck with a problem.

In any case, I have never had a front recovery point on the 'trol. I can only assume the previous owner removed it for some reason.

Now, I recently installed a set of PC protection plates - bash plate, transfer case protector, diff guard and recovery points.

All installed very easily, apart from the right-hand recovery point, and the reason for this is that I cannot seem to find any bolts that fit the stock recovery point threads in the chassis. From what I've been able to ascertain, it's a 14mm bolt. But I've tried all thread pitches and have not been able to get a bolt to fit...

Most people I've spoken to used their stock recovery point bolts. I, unfortunately, don't have that luxury as I don't have them...

Does anybody know what the bolt specifications are ? (ie: Bolt size and thread-pitch)

Alternatively, does anybody have a set of three unused recovery point bolts lying around ?

Tinus,

I'd love to. But I have no time to do so.

Busy week. Busy weekend. Heading off to Nairobi on Monday. Back shortly thereafter. Then I drive through to Bots :(

Ian,

I'm sure Peter Connan can tell you exactly what bolt it is you need.

Give him a pm?

They are definately M14 x 1.5, unless somebody has somehow modified it.

But if there hasn't been anything in those holes for many years, then the thread can be very dirty, preventing a bolt from going in.

You can try two things:
1) see if you can hire a tap.
2) modify a bolt into a "temporary tap". Cut a groove into a bolt with a cutting blade on an angle grinder, going against the direction of turning, if possible harden it, and use it slowly and with lots of oil.

Peter,

Thanks for the info.

I'll give the cut bolt thing a try. Hopefully that will work. It's bothering me at the moment.

Peter - thanks again.

The bolt thing worked a treat. Gathered the threads in the nuts must have been fairly gungded up (they really didn't look so).

In any case, cleared threads with the "cut bolt" above, and plenty of oil. And fitted my right-hand recovery point last night. Nice to have the job completed...
