Sound proofing - future project

Post by Traveler »

When I installed the rear jump seats I was suprised to see that the carpet goes directly on metal.

So I decided that Repulse needs some sound proofing.

Busy researching my options, but something like Dynamat will definately be going in.

Dynamat is expensive, but works like a bomb (a very silent bomb, that is).

I've had it fitted in most of my vehicles as part of the sound systems upgrades...

Chris, it is effective. The product I am interested in would probably set me back R4k in total. :mytwocents:

I had a look on that Hilux site, many guys were interested in getting the material. What i do not find is any reports on the effectiveness of the modifications once material is installed. Does anyone know - is it worthwhile or just a gimmick?

I went ahead and purchased 4 sheets today from ProAuto rubber for proofing @ R98.00 a sheet.
I'll probably install it this weekend, and then do a dB comparison.

I think there is more than one source that contributes to Noise, the one is to stop sound from being transmitted or propagated and the other is to stop sound from being created. Sound is just vibration of airwaves and I believe these sheets assist by stopping body panels from vibrating and creating noise. Most modern cars have more than one type damping , the one similar to these sheets are all around our cars and stops the panels from vibrating. the other type damps engine sounds, gearbox sounds etc and this is typically found against the bulkhead, around transmission tunnel etc . I've also seen softish material in wheel wells and I assume this is to damp road grit hitting the body.

Back to these sheets, the fancy stuff are all sold by audio specialists and they swear by this stuff, Since a speaker adds a source of vibration to a door, etc I am sure it will work as this will assist in damping the vibration of the panels from the new source. the hotrodders also use it but mainly to kerb heat from soaking into the cabin as many of these product do have a foil covering.

Go and have a look what mercs and Rolls etc use, it's not just this stuff but thick fibrous material as well. Some of these are very expensive and I know people that was disappointed when they used it, it won't drop the inside noise by 10dB but will damp the panel's vibrating if you crank the audio upto 110db and you won't hear the inside of the door shaking loose.
