Patrol door hinge worn out

Post by ricster »

I'm looking for an easy way to sort this problem out.....

The drivers side door, as you open it drops a few millimeters and when closing, unless you give it a firm closing action will not close properly and lift up by those few millimeters again.
When I looked at the hinges while picking up the door (while open) I can see the play on the hinge. it seems mostly on the top hinge, but assume that the bottom one will be pretty much worn out too.
Now..... the problem is that the pin in the hinge has had the ends pressed to form a mushroom to prevent it falling out. This seems to be a difficult thing to replace. I did not want to strip off fender body panels to get to the bolts holding the hinge onto the body, or to replace the hinge totally( can only imagine what that would cost from the dealers)....

So any advise or suggestions would be appreciated
Regards
Cedric

Ricster, I had a similar problem after I had the rubbers replaced on two righthand doors, Peter C also assisted at 3Provinces he adjusted the D bar on the body , it has 2 screws on the GQ. After driving some heavy corrugated roads in Lesotho now in Dec my driver door started again by not closing properly so I once again adjusted the D bar on the body and it is back to normal again

Hoop dit help

@ Jules: what is the "D bar?"

@ Ricster: If I understand the problem correctly, there are door alignment shims that you can use to get the door to gee with the door frame.

Be forewarned, once the doors get out of alignment, it is hard to ever get them to line up perfectly again.

I don't think the problem I helped Jules with is the same that Cedric is experiencing. The D Bar Jules is referring to is what nissan calls the striker, being the part of the lock setup that is bolted to the body, not the door.

Cedric I think you have to remove the fender to adjust the hinges.

Alternatively you need to stay in the car and not get out all the time. :eureka:

Cedric, I agree with you - it is the pin in the hinge that is warn.

I have a similar problem but not that bad. I just noticed one day that there is some play in the top hinge - no play on the passenger side door - it does not get used that much.

Maybe the best way to fix it is to remove the hinge and take it to an engineering place where they can replace the pin.

I will have to look at grinding the pin that has the ends "mushroomed" to keep it in place. Then check the holes in the plate where the pin goes through to see if it has become oval, and either resize the hole and pin slightly bigger, or look at buying a whole new hinge.... for top and bottom...... can't see that being a cheap option
