Difflock light not going off.

Post by AJ Dup »

Hi guys

Ive got 2 problems.
1st my difflock light doesn't want to go off if I'm in 4x4 L and I switch it on the difflock itself switches on and off but the light is still on. Even if I'm in 2H its still on and flickering as a lose connection. I've looked at all my connections that I could find and sprayed them still light doesn't want to go off.
Please help???
2nd problem when I'm in 4x4lo and I turn sharp a loud GGGRRR noise come from my wheels what could that be and its only when I'm in 4x4?

I hope there is someone that can help me out there?!

The light problem is most likely in the switch on the rear diff. Some moisture get into the switch and then the pin on the switch get stuck. Just remove the switch from the diff, clean it so that the pin moves easely and that should sort the light out.

You could also have a problem on your vacuum pipes and solenoids for the difflock. If the pipes are leaking or are blocked then there is no return vacuum and your difflock stays on. (Hope that is not the case)

My guess is that the problem is caused by positive pressure in the diff housing, probably due to a blocked breather. This happens when the diff gets hot and the pressure build up compresses the actuator for the vacuum locking mechanism. I had exactly the same problem in the Messum Crater with my diff light flashing on and off and then staying on. I jacked up the one rear wheel to check if the diff was really locked and it was. I removed one back half shaft and drove to Uis but by the time I got there the problem was gone (due to the diff cooling down slightly). I eventually phoned someone at Gearmax who gave me the answer and as soon as I cleared my blocked axle breather the problem permanently disappeared.

Mike, the vacuum actuator on the Patrol's diff is completely external to the diff, so I doubt that pressure build-up in the diff case could have actuated the diff lock as happened with your Gearmax diff.

Gerrit, I agree that if the actuator is external to the diff then my suggestion must be off the mark.

Dieselfde ding het met my Mazda drifter gebeur, na n taamlike soektog was die diff nie die oorsaak van die geluid nie maar die transfer case. Dalk help dit?
