Difflock not working

Post by Mamba »

Hi Everyone,

My difflock (2004 4.8 GRX) stopped working this weekend. When I engage the difflock the light comes on immediately. When I start driving I can hear a ratched sound coming from the rear diff, but the locker doesn't work. When the difflock is switched off the diff is quiet.

I jacked up the car last night and test the difflock. I connected the vacuum unit directly to the engine's vacuum to illuminate the valves etc. It still didn't work. The vacuum unit/ lights etc is working and does engage. I drained the oil, and found some metal parts stuck to the drain plug. Does anyone have some spare parts for this locker? Or any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Mamba

You could always put in an Afroxlocker...weld the diff :rolling:
Sorry, I couldn't help but put that out there
Hope you come right :salute:

Hi Mamba
When I engage the difflock the light comes on immediately.
Is the light flashing or does it stay fully burning?

I would test the actuator on the diff. Maybe it's faulty and it's pushing the lock fork against the lock sleeve and making a noise? Not sure if it could even be that but worth a try.

Uh-oh. Doesn't sound good. How big are the metal bits?

The problem with this option is that you have to buy a smashed car for 92k to get a second hand diff lock.
That makes even a new 28K ARB looker sound cheap.

I have a feeling the dog clutch has kicked off its edges. Did you test it in reverse with the wheel up. If it holds when in reverse, but not in forward rotation, then I think the diff lock itself is cooked. If the light is showing solid, then the actuator is registering that the lock is fully engaged, so i doubt its the solenoid or actuator that is faulty.
