Re: No reverse gear A/T
David- Yes i reversed with the caravan before with no issues.
I also checked the wiring of the socket previously and it was correct. We had a lot of rain coming here and Nissan asked if i drove through water because the electrical sockets was wet (which they dried and sprayed with Q20). The lights is still all confused though.
Ill take your advice and get the wiring checked out first when i am back in CPT before i spend money on the gearbox. unfortunately i dont have any testers and correct tools here to do it and it will have to wait. They tested the D gears and said there is absolutely nothing wrong with the gears it self and i can tow my caravan back to CPT without causing further damage. For now i plan my parking spots wisely.
I'll keep this post updated when I have made any new progress
Thanks for the valuable input so far David.
Herrie - i hope not

Re: No reverse gear A/T
Eddie, have you tried disconnecting the battery overnight to see if anything resets?
Not sure if it helps but I'm pretty close to Yellow Sands.

Re: No reverse gear A/T
Eddie, a Land Rover (well, the old ones anyway) I might still have a chance with but the Patrols I know very little about; in fact that's the reason I bought one (moeg vir Land Rovers regmaak). All that I have handy is a not very expensive multi-tester and a few simple spanners and screw drivers. The only other thing I can think of is to check your reverse lights / globes and the actual gearbox linkage. Otherwise maybe the gearbox is in some sort of self protect mode but I would have thought disconnecting the battery would reset that and/or Nissan would have picked it up. I wonder if the gearbox place is right. If you look around the web, it looks like there's nothing on the issue - and I would expect to see something if it was a common problem.IR_Eddie wrote:Thanks Kobus. Re: No reverse gear A/T
I had a similar problem , only on a 4.5 GQ automatic.
It sounds like the exact same symptoms with reverse sometimes working at high revs.
The problem was the seals on the piston that selects reverse inside the box. It cost me R17k and that was 10 years back.
Totally unrelated , that same auto box went into limp mode with only first and second available after every hectic offroad event.
I traced that to a bad connection in the wiring harness where the gearbox wiring plugs into the car wiring close to the bell housing.
Good luck. One can still hope that it is only an electronic fault.

Re: No reverse gear A/T
My point is that it has a known fault on the brake lights which Nissan was unable to trace and fix (We all know power is limited on the 4.8's when the ECU/TCU picks up your foot is on the brake).bogeyman wrote:...Good luck. One can still hope that it is only an electronic fault.
Now fix the basics first and see if the 'problem' still exist. An auto electrician should do that in no time...
Only when all these faults are sorted I would even consider all the worst case scenarios

Re: No reverse gear A/T
lets hope its electrical. Definitely taking the cheaper option first with auto elec before i pay someone to fiddle with the box.
If its the same as bogeyman's im gonna cry. That will be a heavy price tag for a vehichle which i only had for 6 months and that has only 79k on the clock.
