Great post, my hubs are in desperate need of an overhaul - probably never been done in 17 years and 350 000km! One side make a horrific noise after being in 4wd and going to 2wd. Grating noise for a few seconds then a loud clunk, then all okay.

Rod, you will not be dissapointed if you service the hubs. Its really not that big of a job and your hubs will work like new ones.

I would like to get feedback if you are going to do it yourself?

Michael, before you took the hub off, was the hub in the auto position or the lock position? Or does it not matter in what position it is before removal?

My troll had a service and wheel bearings were tightened up, on the way home it started making a horrible noise, from the left front wheel I think its the hub, which looked very clean when i took it apart. I cleaned it anyway but it kept on grinding intermittently.
I then swapped the hubs over - left on to right wheel, Will they still work like this or are they now trying to lock in reverse?
Ive got a site visit in Limpopo tomorrow with some horrible roads to get over and I'm worried about damaging something,

Rudolph - I did mine unlocked and its very easy to get them on and off. I would think the important part is not to force it back on, tighten opposite bolts little by little to keep it going on straight

Rudolph, you can take them of regardless if they are in Lock or Auto. It is just when putting them back I found its easier if they are in the Lock position as you can easaly find the spliance on the sideshaft to push iy back and line up the bolt holes.

Ryan, it does not matter which side goes where. You can swop them around no prob

Did they only tighten the bearings, or did they replace one? if the incorrect inner bearing (which should have a larger-than-normal inner shoulder radius) is used, there is not enough clearance for the hub to un-lock correctly.

If the noise returns, lock the hubs with your wheelspanner and see if that fixes it.

They only tightened the bearings.
I did 700km yesterday, and 100km on horribly corrugated dirt all in H2 with the hubs unlocked, was too scared to go into H4 in case I broke something. No rattle so far.
My logic says it should be fine to swap the hubs - there is nothing on the hub that says left or right side, but I was in an area I didn't particularly want to break down in!

Step 3 - removing the ring was not that easy :-) but thanks for the details, I cleaned mine .

The first one I locked before removing and the innards would not just fall out, I stripped it even further and innards finally came out when I changed it to auto. Second `I left on auto and I bent the ring a bit while removing, however the innards fell out.
