Strange noise from front wheels

Post by jonathan »

Hi guys

Every Friday I drive about a 8km section of gravel road. I use the opportunity to engage 4H to give everything that needs it a workout. Last week after doing this and being back in 2H, I heard a sound very much like the sound of having a playing card stuck to your bicycle's wheel coming from the driver side front wheel. It disappeared after a few hundred meters. After stopping and checking for obvious problems and driving again, there was a horrible scraping noise coming from the passenger side. Almost as if a small rock got stuck between the brake disk and baffle plate. I slowed down and just before coming to a complete stop, there was a clack, and the noise stopped.

Unfortunately it came back and again just before coming to a complete stop there was the clack again but this time I realised that it was definitely some engaging or disengaging. I could not only hear the clack, but feel it as well. Same thing happened this morning, but luckily after the first clack it was fine, drove it 4H again, no problem. I have a suspicion that this afternoon it will do the same thing!

Any thoughts? I am thinking either the hubs or transfer box for some reason is not disengaging properly?

Any thought are welcome!

Maybe next time you do it again just manualy lock the front wheels and hear if the same sound is there - if it is not there then maybe the auto lock take some time to lock the wheel.

Dankie Kobus.

Could it be that the grease inside the hub has gone a bit thick and restricting the movement, so its trying to auto engage but just not quite getting there. Maybe take the auto hub off and give it a good clean and regrease.

That noise is definitely the free wheel hubs that are tying to engage at speed.

Usually this happens when winter approaches and the grease becomes thicker when cold.

There are a few threads about this on the forum.

As Cedrick said , remove , clean and re-grease. Detail instructions are on the mentioned threads.

Hi Guys.
You are all close to the right answer.
My recommendation is to change the transfer case oil by adding some ATF oil to make it a final of 20% ATF and 80% 75W80 oil. Reason is to thin out the oil and thereby stopping the propshaft from turning when in 2H, whichever is causing the auto lockers wanting to engage. This is common in winter.
Try it and give me feedback.
Thanks
Graham

Thanks guys, appreciate it!

Graham I already have 100% ATF in the transfer case. I did a oil change when I got the troll three years ago. Only done about 20 000km since then. Although, I had the clutch done last year June, could they have drained the oil perhaps and replaced with something else?

Dis reg so dankie Michael.
