Goes "clonk"!! (??)

Post by Clem »

Guys, my new GRX is behaving a little disconcertingly. When I have the steering turned full lock ( or something close to it) to the right a loud "clonk" will emanate from the front suspension area. This seems to be something new. Any ideas?

Can it be the shock at the front wheel?

I have the similar thing at the right rear wheel and need to take the shock off to check if it is the problem.

Herrie, could be I suppose. I've locked the front hubs (but in 2wd) and not entirely sure yet but it seems to have gone away now.

Clem you have bump stops ....when u turn at full lock the stop rubs against it when the suspension move it creates rubbing sound

Tinus, it's not a rubbing sound. It's a sudden clonk and then silence. Could though possibly still be bump stop related. I'll check it out.

When we were looking for a sound on a patrol once the propshaft slip was sticking becouse of the lack of grease we looked for that for a while. ...

Okay, parked the car. Engine off, wheels straight. Start the engine and leave the car in "P". Turn the wheels hard lock right, suddenly a loud "crack" sound. Turn hard lock left again, then right again. Nothing. Try it a few times. Nothing again. Have established it has nothing to do with the locking hubs and there is no shock absorber rubbing. Clearly the car has to be moved first and something is settling into place or moving. Wondering what the devil it can be.

A prominent hard clonk? You also feel it through the chassis? TYried my but off to find it, no success. Replaced bushes, shocks etc. No luck. Next it is the bearing replacement and birfield rebuild.

Mine has been doing that for the past 70 000km, if that will be any consilation...

Clem, mine made a similar noise, but only when moving forward and in full lock to the one side - and then the same if locking again to the opposite side when moving forward. It never repeated the noise on the same side unless I turned the other way first. That ended up being the panhard rod bushes that were shot (ended up replacing the whole damned rod 'cause Nissan SA can't supply only bushes!) Anyhow the problem is history now. Good luck!

Thanks for the input guys. Thinking about it all, its almost certainly the panhard rod. It matches 100% with Tony's experience too. I will check the tightness of the mounting bolts.
