Re: Patrol 4.8 Starter
A quick update. Putting the starter back was even easier.
The steps I followed were as follows:
1. I held the starter in place from the bottom with my right hand while screwing in the bottom bolt. This was just tight enough so it is mostly flush at the top as well. I gave it a few turns with the spanner too but the starter still had plenty of play.
2. I screwed the top bolt in with my left hand from the top till finger tightened.
3. Then, this is what made it easy. I used a ratchet swivel joint and two longish extensions so I could ratchet from above the engine. This was super easy and got the bolt tightened in no time.
4. I used the same swivel joint and one extension to tighten the bottom bolt.
Regards
Paul

Re: Patrol 4.8 Starter
Did you end up replacing the starter with new or had it refurbished?
Part number for new Bosch unit would be nice?
Thx

Re: Patrol 4.8 Starter
I replaced with a new Eurolek part for the princely sum of R2300.
Parts-wise, al the info is here: http://www.patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=8071
But to summarise:
Nissan part numbers:
4.5 Starter: 23300 BV000
4.8 Starter: 23300 VC201
Bosch part number:
F042004064
Eurolek part number:
DA23300-VB000
The Nissan parts are model specific. The other two part numbers are apparently drop in replacements for both the 4.5 and the 4.8.

Re: Patrol 4.8 Starter
Buddy, I had it refurbished for less than R1k at Auto electrical services in Pretoria West. The owner said I can also get a refurbished unit for slightly more if I want a backup to carry along. I have enough on the todo list now so I'll get another unit later for backup.
The difference is astounding. I thought the battery was on its way out, but listening to the trol start now it is clear the starter had been struggling for ages.

Re: Patrol 4.8 Starter
Thank you for the info guys.
I was quoted R2500 to have both my starter and alternator recon. Not too bad I guess.
Nothing at fault though. Just like to keep things working proper and prevent unexpected failures.

Re: Patrol 4.8 Starter
So where exactly is the starter located in the engine bay? I have a feelings I’ll need to replace mine pretty soon . It’s struggling to turn in the mornings and the battery is still 100%. Just a note, it is a refurb one

Re: Patrol 4.8 Starter
Good luck...
When standing in front of the vehicle looking at it, the starter motor is located at the back of the engine bay on the left hand side at the bottom.
Use a ratchet with "universal" and extension for the top bolt (I seem to recall that it is a 14 socket). And remove the bottom bolt from underneath the truck. Then maneuver the starter out between the suspension bits.
There is a fat permanent on cable running from battery +, so disconnect the battery before removing it.
