Cooling system: vertical pipe in expansion case

Post by Florian320 »

Good afternoon!

I recently had to refill my cooling system twice without any sign of spillage. Also the exhaust gases don't have a white color.
When I had to refill for the second time I had a look at the expansion case just to realize that it is full, quite above max.

After checking the part catalogues I found out that the pipe which goes down vertical into the case is missing - that afaic is the reason why the fluid level in the cooler is decreasing but not increasing again - how would the water go back without that pipe...

I asked the dealer, that small pipe costs about 450 ZAR which is a bit ridiculous.
So my question is: can anybody unscrew the cap of his TB45E expansion case and measure the pipe for me? I'll then get one from the building supply, that should be good enough, isn't it?

Or might that give me a problem due to the temperature of the water?
The original part number is 2171201J01, if someone has one in stock without any use for it.

Best regards,

Florian

R450 for a piece of pipe ???? :surprised: :surprised:

I'll measure the length of the pipe on my 4.5's overflow tank this afternoon.

Regarding your other query (ie: water temperature vs price material), I have no idea. Perhaps an idea to discuss this with your local radiator people and just get the correct spec pipe from them ?

The vertical pipe in the overflow, from what I measured, is around 90mm long. It is a little difficult to measure exactly, as it is a pipe, and they bend a little. However, I do not think the exact length is particularly important. You want it fully planted in the surface of the water when the overflow tank is at minimum marking. 90mm should be perfect.
