Hi Ian,

That exact same pipe went on my 4.5 2 weeks before we were due to leave for our Wildcoast trip. Did the whole enchelada with replacement pipe, flushing and coolant, drove it around town and nothing gave me any indication that the gasket is suspect. 200km into our trip on the Saturday, the car started overheating and we limped and refilled for the next 1500km about's. The poor Patrol went through hell and back as on the Sunday, my travel buddy's LR Defender dropped a clutch and gearbox just outside Jamestown en-route to Queenstown. Rollback the LR to Queenstown and pushed through to Morgan Bay with 6 people on board. Went back to Queenstown ( 235km x 2 ) the Monday to collect the contents of the LR and back to Morgan Bay then the radiator also sprung a leak. Look, by this time I was goed g@tvol. When all and kit was in camp I had to have the Patrol taken on rollback to Nissan EL and had it trucked back home.
LR is still in Queenstown R 46k later and that after a turbo replacement of R 14k 3 days before we departed.

Do yourself a big favour ( You know what they say about hind-sight.... ) have your radiator pressure tested and test for exhaust gas in the coolant to make sure the gasket is still intact. I never though about this and it cost me dearly.

Head coming off this weekend and radiator out. Will redo complete head with engineering and will take the radiator to Silverton. I just pray the bottom end is still fine and the rings haven't perhaps collapsed.

While I have the opportunity, we camped at Yellowood Forest in Morgan Bay, hat's off to Sean and Debbie for accommodating us way longer than our intended stay and making us feel welcome, A+++ place to camp when anybody on the forum is in the area.

Decided I'd order the Mad Man coolant level sensor kit. I originally contacted Mad Man directly, but they referred me to Performance Products (www.performanceproducts.co.za).

The cost was R770 with R138 delivery. I placed my order on 4th January, and received a notification that Performance Products would only be open for business again on 7th January. However, my package arrived yesterday. Sort of happy with that.

I'll post on installation when I get around to installing it over the weekend.

Derick,

Sorry to hear about your difficulties.

I'm happy with my radiator - it's a fairly new aftermarket Tombo radiator - and pretty sure there are no leaks at all.

I may test for exhaust gas in coolant for piece of mind. Although I am fairly confident I caught the issue in time and that the head gasket is fine. The temperature was close to max and there is no evidence of water in the engine oil. Any idea where one has this done ?
