engine swop td42 and td42t

Post by bud40 »

good day .

really cool site. thank you. I have a 1993 y60 with a td42 t . it has a 24 v electric system and an auto gearbox. I also have a 1999 y61 n/a td42 with a 12v electric system and manual gearbox.

Id like to swop them and put the td42t into the y61 . I'm sure its not a simple matter but i do want to investigate it thoroughly and if i can do it want to do it well.

i thought i would swop them out but one is a 24 v system and the other a 12 v.
also the gearboxes are different.

has anyone heard of a n/a td42 with an auto gearbox?
electrically what needs to be changed on the motor . it has 24 v heater plugs on the td42t. what else?

thanks

Hithen

The only things that need to be changed is the following:
1. Starter
2. Alternator
3. Solenoid on diesel pump
4. Glow plugs

As far as I know thats about it

Doesnt the td42t have stronger internals compared to the td42?

Are you thinking of just changing engines over or is it gearboxes as well, cause that is when it becomes a major operation with wiring looms and computors etc..

Reason I said what I did is that I am a bit concerned about the N/A engine on the Auto box. I think it's going to be very very lazy?

good day

thank you for the replies, this is of great help.

Peter I've not looked into turbo charging the y61 and it may be the better option especially as your other comment of the n/a engine on an auto gearbox being very very lazy.

Hugejp yes i think the internals would be different , so would that mean when turbo charging the n/a engine we run it at a lower boost. ? does anyone know the normal boost set up on the standard turbo engine? can the n/a engine once turbo ed run to this boost?

Micheal thanks for that info. this is great . i really want to keep the engines as is .

Wilkie . Id like to do just the engines as i also think then it would be a major op. my only concern is the n/a engine with auto g box being very lazy.

thank you all, really good advice for me to think about

kind regards
Hithen

Auto on a N/A td42..... will be a donkey.....walking backwards.... with a carrot stuck somewhere not nice.

The GU body is heavier than a GQ and that's one of the things that eats you when trying to do an overtaking mission..... A low boost turbo done properly and set up properly is by far the best thing for any TD42 motor. Its only when you start pushing the boundaries with boost that one must be careful with the internals of the TD42 motor. A low boost set up of 0.5 - 0.6 bar boost will already make a huge difference and be a relatively safe option as long as the fueling is set correctly. Mine is TD42 N/A type motor, but I have put in Keystone rings and pistons, and I push 0.8 bar with ease, and mine hauls ass when I need to.

Cedric

Live is just to short to roll with N/A diesel ....only the 4.2td pick up has the same internals the Ud40 motor .....the pick up boosts around .3 bar and the lorrie much more ...change the pistons and you can go big . Or leave it in and hope you have silwer top pistons they can take a bit of a beating
Imho.....pull the head get it checked valves seats ect
Check sleeves for wear and tear
Put turbo pistons and new big ends and do your pump
Then you have a proper machine .... :mytwocents:
O yes first buy the madman .....for egt and temps and waterlevels....om te meet is om te weet ....
I boost about 1.1 to 1.2 bar when gunning it on highway had a boost pipe pop off yeasterday... :surprised:
It sounded like a truck backfired and egts jumped from 400 to 700deg in a heart bead
If you want speak to micheal he is the diesel ginie and will get you sorted in no time :blonde:
My bakkie makes about 100kw and 400nm on rear wheels and i drive it like i stole it ....after engine rebuild we are heading for 150000km only broke a fanbelt so far

thank you Tinus and Ricster.

your replies make me want to apply for leave, put on overalls and get cracking. sounds really promising.

I did see some y60 n/a engines with auto boxes on some aussie and jap sites so i now know they exist! tho i do agree about the donkey  i think our altitude will rob the power more on the n/a engines.

thanks again
