4.8 Engine oil

Post by Pieter B »

I bought a 4.8 a few weeks ago and thought it would be a good idea to give it a service. This would be more to give myself a baseline to work from. I read the handbook and looked at posts on the forum and the 4.8 needs a 5W30 engine oil. I had a big surprise when I saw the price. My question is: if the earlier 4.8's were able to use a 5W40 oil, what changed in the later models. The ausie forms suggest using the 5W40 on higher milage engines. Has anybody used 5W40?

Pieter, use a 15w40. Graham uses AGIP 15W40 in the 4.8. He says that the heavier oil is better for them. IIRC it prevents premature shim wear. At first I wondered about (questioned) this but some research indicates that Graham is absolutely correct. You willl also see that in your owners manual 15w40 is one of the specified options and covers the entire expected temperature range in South Africa. At my next service I may switch to a Mobil 15w50 fully syn.

If still under guarantee -- stick with the manufacturer's specs
If Out of warranty, go with what Graham says.
Over 300,000 km switch to a GOOD Diesel oil [Delo 400; Rumula; Mobil's Liqi gold or Engen's Diesel Oil ] - BUT then service more regularly

Kagiso, 15W40 is manufacturer's spec. If you look at the 4.8 lubrication specifications, you will see a whole range of different options listed, one of which is 15W40. In fact it appears that the Nissan agent's in South Africa are also using 15W40 for the 4.8.

I agree. If Graham is servicing the 4.8's with 15W40, then I'll do the same. Thanks everyone, hopefully I'll a spareshop open tomorrow.

Hi folks. By mistake I have purchased 16 litres of Castrol Edge 10W-60, this is a fully synthetic oil. I am in Dubai, and our ambient never goes below 10C temps, and rises to 40C for 4 months of the year.

Should I use this oil, or change to a lighter oil 5W-40 perhaps. The Patrol is 4.8 Auto, with 168,000kms and is a daily driver.

5w-30 recommended, or 10W-40 and 10W-50 is also recommended for hot weather.

Local dealer used to use 20W-50 on 5000kms changes.

i want to use a fully synthetic for 10,000kms changes on same filter. Since my warranty is out, I have switched to 5W-40 or 5W-30
