Hi
Have anyone done a stage 2 conversion at van der Linde on a 4.5 Trol?
Was it worth it?

Thanx

Hi Jannie

I have a 2001 4.5 auto
this car had a VDL stage 2 conversion done by the previous owner.

One would need to compare it head to head with an unmodified 4.5 in order to see how much of a difference this conversion makes.
The only thing I can confirm are some dyno result done in 2015 . / Stevens Auto Clinc / East Rand

max power = 131.2 @4000 rpm and max Torque 285.5 @2500 rpm (this is at altitude of ~ 1500m)

Furthermore some praises from Graham / G-tech confirming that this particular car runs very well.

Average consumption over the last 35.000 km ~ 16 l / 100 km.

Thanx Picasso, I need a little bit more power and think it will do it.

The 4.5 engine in my car has a vanderlinde conversion.

Comparing it to the original 4.2 is probably a bit of a waste of time, except that I am convinced it has less torque at low revs (up to say 1200rpm).

I reckon you will lose a bit at the bottom, and gain a bit at the top.

My personal opinion is that it probably doesn't make enough difference to justify the money spent, and that you would be better of trading up to a 4.8...

My Prado 4.0 V6 was done by Vanderlinde.. Shaun did an amzing job on it and it really mad a massive difference. That 2006 put out more power than the 2011 NEW Prado. Very much worth it. All the way through the rev range.
Maybe P C's 4,5 is sluggish because it is carburator fed and not fuel injection ?? The chip on the Prado made the the Vanderlinde upgrade work optimal.
Maar hy het ook geskuif die tyd wat die chip uitgehaal was

Good morning

Here is a link to a discussion from 2010 about the conversion.

Hallo Jannie

I would tend to agree with Peter
Establishing how much more power and torque it makes will be difficult as you would need to compare it with an identical Vehicle on the same Dyno. Or there is someone on the forum which had the before and after performance measured on the Dyno.
I think there is a little bit of an improvement in performance and consumption with a VDL conversion;
How much that improvement justifies the conversion cost... I don't know;
It is definitely not close to the 4.8 performance; whereas I must say that part of the 4.8 performance comes also down to the gearbox (5 speed 4.8 auto vs 3 speed+overdrive 4.5 auto)
And that is were I agree with Peter; I guess that today the conversion cost will be far in excess of 30K ???

Then you need to ask yourself:

1) How much does that conversion cost ?
2) How much will you get for your 4.5 ?
3) And how much does a 2004 - 2005 4.8 cost ?

You might just figure out that 3 is less than 1+2.

To the defense of the 4.5 (auto):
Whilst not having the same performance in the 4.5 compared to the 4.8.
I find the cruising in the 4.5 slightly more relaxing as it changes gears less often and it generally runs a lower rpm at comparable speeds. It cruses easily at 120 + in overdrive at 2000 RPM and it rarely changes gears down.
