Re: 4.8 vortex maker in intake
Morning Joshua
I have a 3.0 DI, i found exactly the same thing in the boost pipe. The way its fitted and the way it looks is definitely not factory fitted in my opinion.
I actually also took pictures to find out if other members have seen it in their vehicles.
I am not going to re fit it in mine when i put everything back together.
Regards
Dewald

Re: 4.8 vortex maker in intake
The prev owner of mine was telling me the other day about something he installed in the intake pipe thats supposed to change the airflow inside the pipe. i havent opened it up to see, but it must be something similiar to what you have here.
I cant see how this can improve anything though? Its just more stuff getting in the way of the air flow?

Is this actually something that has been proven to be better?
Can't really find anything on the internet about it. The theory behind it makes sense but would be nice to see a dyno or actual test being done.

Yes. If installed incorrectly it would disrupt the flow rather than inhancing it. It must be set acuratly on a dyno and will probably if it works only work at very high refs. And also it was at the breather from the engine.
I removed it. I still cant feel any difference. It think its more wish ful thinking then anything else.
Anyways. Thanks for the feedback. If anybody else comes across this with an opinion. Please keep me posted.

Re: 4.8 vortex maker in intake
Think it is also suppose to increase fuel economy. But many believe it is more a hoax/gimmick than really adding any value..
"The internal combustion engines in cars and trucks are essentially large air pumps: The action of the pistons sucks in a precise mix of fuel and air, which is then ignited and vented out through the exhaust. The energy of the burning mixture forces the engine to suck in more of the mix, repeating the cycle. And this next piece of fuel-saving quackery plays off misunderstandings about that process.
Engineers pay close attention to airflow into an engine. The amount of turbulence in the flow can affect how fuel and air mix as they enter the combustion chamber, and this can impact an engine's efficiency. The creators behind intake vortex gadgets often claim that their devices alter this airflow in a way that improves fuel-to-air mixing, improving fuel burn and consequently getting more mileage out of each gallon.
The main warning flag with vortex generators is that they're actually based on antiquated engine technology. Automobiles built before engine management computers became commonplace did rely on the shape and length of intake bodies to manipulate fuel and air mixing. But modern vehicles have computers that constantly adjust fuel flow to match airflow: Create a turbulent airflow in the intake (as a vortex generator does), and the car simply adjusts the amount of fuel it injects. The result? The car may actually run worse, since it's compensating for altered airflow by altering the fuel flow. The computer's fuel-flow rate is calibrated at the factory to provide the right amount of fuel for each combination of driving speed and engine load. Alter this, and you're more likely to hurt performance than improve it ."

Re: 4.8 vortex maker in intake
Well done on taking it out, there are a lot of snake oil gizmos out there that claim to do amazing things and dont deliver.
Reminds of this extra fuel filter/pump/particle charger device my friend installed on his diesel Isuzu which they claimed would give something like 5% fuel increase, well on the first long off-road tour he had problems with it leaking diesel and he had to remove it to continue the trip That exercise cost him about 4 tanks of diesel to supply and fit the gadget
