Erratic starting after standing a day

Post by Ds J »

dInjectors is a bliksem to check unless you have the means to pressurize the fuel to the requires "bar" pressure. Bosch diesel electric will check them for you much easier. If you are going to attempt to remove the injectors, BE VERY CAREFUL of the spill rail ( its the thing with 6 rings connected by little metal tubes on the top of the injectors) as it can twist as you loosen the injector and then crack or break off..... VERY VERY FRUSTRATING !!

On the Glowplugs, they are very easy to replace, however again care must be taken when removing the old glowplug, especially if that glowplug has not worked well for a while. What happens is a carbon deposit builds up on the metal part that glows. On a new glowplug the whole tip glows a bright red/orange, which will generally burn off any stuff that is on the tip. as the glow plug deteriorates the tip doesn't heat up near the back and carbon deposits can build up there. So if you loosen the glow plug and feel resistance from just after you "crack" the seal, stop tighten up and loosen and repeat the process to try break off the carbon on the tip and not break off the tip of the glow plug..... YOU DON"T want that to happen !! I know on mine a few years back I battled with one or two of the glow plugs and just took my time repeatedly loosening and tightening, I think I sprayed some Q20 on the threads to seep in and assist getting the carbon of the tip.

Reinstalling the glow plugs is also easy, but again careful you dont twist that stupidly designed diesel spill rail

Frans told me once that one must use brake fluid to loosen glow plugs if there is a carbon build up and they are very difficult to remove, put brake fluid overnight so it loosens all the buildup

Should one not change them at a prescribed interval??? Don't want to wait till I am in the bush and struggle with such nonsense .....

Dirk, I did the Lesotho snow trip with only 2 glow plugs actually warming up to a point where only the tips went a dull red and I could still start the motor. It did cough and splutter for maybe 2-3 seconds once the motor started. It took a little longer cranking to get the motor to start, but start she did. After 2-3 seconds it ran as smooth as a 4.2 diesel can run. I would say that only if you battle to start it, then replace them. In summer here the glow plugs don't really make much of a difference other than the cranking time being possibly a half a second less. If 3 of the 6 glow plugs arent working you will still be able to easily start that tank engine.

If you find this winter, on a cold morning that you battle to start it, then replace them, otherwise I would rather spend the money on something else.

There is no service interval for glow plugs, you only change them when they stop working.

Injectors, on the other hand, is cheap to have tested and can save you your engine. Having them pop tested and to have their pressures reset will probably cost less than R1,000 and is worth it!

If you have some DIY skills you can buy an injector tester from Adendorff and give it a go. Think they sell them for around R1,700 if I remember correctly. Not sure if they still sell them either.
