R140 000 = 11667 lieter petrol (teen geskatte R12/l).
Dit behoort so 58333 km te gee (teen 5km/l)

Assuming the following:

4.5 Petrol purchase price is R110k and 3l CRD purchase cost is R250k
4.5 gets 5.5 km/l and 3l CRD gets 8km/l
Fuel prices as for August (petrol R12.38, diesel R10.96
And assuming all other cost are exactly the same (which is very unlikely)

Then the break-even point is at 159000 km.
Your spend on vehicle and fuel (no tires, maintenance, insurance or licence fees) will then be R467 830.

Few people keep a car that long.

Welcome to the forum, Jaap :salute:

I fully concur with Peter's example

I think your expectations or hopes that a Patrol might achieve a "budget-friendly" consumption of 9-10 km / l are simply not realistic.

(maybe in a diesel with folded in side mirrors, going downhill.... which in itself is unrealistic)

The simple truth is ... the bigger car.... the bigger the cost.... in the one or other way.

You also need to look at it as how you want to use the car.
If it will become your weekend or holiday car then the (little bit) of increased consumption should relay become secondary. You will benefit of much lower insurance premiums and a vehicle which is generally reliable, provided that it is regularly and properly serviced .

I use my Patrol as a daily drive, weekend and holiday vehicle...... just because I relay enjoy the truck.

My final advice as already suggested by Tinus.

Calculate the running cost per KM

See what your budget allows you to buy and calculate the running cost per km , considering fuel-cost, insurance, service cost, repair cost, licence cost etc.

aah ..... one last one......

my average consumption in a (close to standard) 4.5 auto = 16.26 l / 100 km or 6.16 km / l
calculated average over the last 16.000 km....... sooo ......... its not so bad
