Ian.... Its only the dirty minded people that see past what we say here sometimes.... It actually is all above the belt.... well sometimes.

Back to topic.... Hmmm R55k with how much mileage? I would say that if the body was in good condition, with no extras, then yes fair price for both buyer and seller, but rust issues are a bliksem on ANY vehicle and sorting that out properly could cost you R20k easily. Look the Patrols are build as tough as catfish in a dry river bed, but will succumb to the elements if not sorted out.

Post a few pics of the Patrol, that way we can offer possibly a better opinion..... or maybe help you source a better condition Patrol for similar price.

Peter Connan will give you some good advice on the 4.2 petrol motor.

Also there is Frans Fourie ( tour de Frans here on the forum ). He is in the Belville area.... PM me if you want his number. He is a 4.2 diesel guru, and a very good honest guy that works on all and any vehicles. I'm sure he could possibly assist you with any issues you may have.

Can someone give me an idea whether paying 55K + 15K for fixes is a good deal for the 1996 patrol, or not.
Found another two today, a 1999 grx 4.5, around 170000km for 90K, but no service history (looks really nice though), the other one is a 2004, same model with similar km for 54K!! Too good to be true.

The price seems low, but it is difficult to say without seeing the vehicle or knowing what condition it is in.

Also have a look at these:
(Is the one you are considering perhaps one of these?)

Welcome to the forum Donald.

The price for a +_ 20 year old vehicle can vary significantly.
I have seen them trading for ~50K up to 140K.

It all comes down to condition and the accessories.

As a general rule you can say you will get what you pay for.

Do not expect to get a vehicle in pristine conditions for 50 K.

As said before in this treat It will be difficult to judge a vehicle without having actually seen the vehicle.
The only thing I can recommend to you is to have a look at as many cars as possible. By doing so you will start getting a feel for what is a good vehicle for the price .

Two more comments:
1) don't overrate the mileage done on a Patrol. 200 T Km is nothing provided that it is well maintained.
2) Service record: If you buy privately the seller should be able to tell you what was done to the vehicle for the period of last ownership. Nissan SA should also be able to provide service record information if you provide them with the VIN number. (at least for the first 100t Km.

Happy hunting :salute:

Its VERY difficult to give you a good answer.... we don't know what condition the vehicle is in. You mention rust....How much rust, and how bad? .... What does the motor look like, How many Km ( I did ask in my earlier post ) ... oil leaks, Burfield joint condition, I can go on and on....

In comparison... The first 2 on the list SJC posted for you those 2 Patrols for that price seem a much better option than a rusty one, but one would have to have a look at it in detail.
The third one, the 1999 Patrol for R95 000, is also a good buy, but that is a 4.2 diesel without a turbo, so will be a bit of a donkey, but as powerful as you can get.

The next one is in the same line as what you have..... so the first 2 seem a better option all of a sudden.( rust on those one dependent )

The next is also a good deal, the 4.2 diesel mentioned earlier will be a GL, whereas this one is a GRX ( more luxuries ), and will go better 4.5 and a 4.2 turbo diesel are very similar in drivability power, but very different in fuel consumption.

Next is a bit of a bastardized Safari.... 6.2L V8 diesel, although probably very nice to play with, looks like it still needs a little work in the engine bay.

The last one ....I would phone it straight away and find out. A good bargain if you can get it

Mileage on all these motors means diddly squat. They are good for at least 500 000Km and can take MAJOR abuse. The drive trains on all Patrols are so over designed and strong that they make the suspension of the closest rival to the Patrol look like a babies toy.

You need to believe in your choice. We cannot tell you that this is what you must do. We can only offer advice on info you give us....

I phoned the "last one" (red one for 54K) earlier today. Apparently FSH, very low km, no issues. Owner is apparently moving overseas and wants to get rid of it quickly. Spoke to two guys at the dealership, but battled to understand them (foreign African accents). If it checks out it's possibly a super bargain. Anyone willing to go check it out? And not buy it if it's a bargain:)

Already spoke to a few owners listed here by SJC. A few with no service history, personally I wouldn't go there. I've been car hunting for two months since selling my unFortuner and fuel consumption aside, find the Patrol the best value for money. Other one on my watch list, also excellent value for money....Terracan.

Oh, forgot to mention before, when I drove this one, it felt nice on the road at high speed, but I reckon you have to concentrate on keeping your line, otherwise you might get a nasty surprise. Turning off the freeway I approached the lights fast to feel the brakes. There was a sudden shudder as I first braked, didn't last long, but it was very obvious. Nothing further stopping in town at normal speeds.

Feel very dof now, but how do I ad pics? Tried all the icons above, but no luck.

Personally I think it is not realistic to expect a 1996 model car to have a full service history.
You will have to rely on expert opinion on the condition of the car, on the stuff that matters (if a review by someone like Graham from G-Tech is possible), and then bite the bullet - hoping nothing is missed. Also, even if it does by some miracle have a full service history, after 20 years, something out of the blue can still cave in. So I do not think the FSH counts for that much at that age anymore.

A Terracan? That is really a very very different kettle of fish to a Patrol. The only comparable alternative to a GQ, in my view would be an 80 series Cruiser.

This is in my view normal for a big heavy solid axle car with mud terrains on.

I have a very good friend with a Terracan. The V6 petrol.

It's a great towing car and nicer on the road than my GQ, but off road it's just not on the same page. Very little flex and just an LSD on the rear axle. It should be good in sand, but it struggles on twisty terrain.

As for whether the first-mentioned car is a deal: well, R55k is a pretty good price, but it depends on how much rust there is. If you truly can get it into good running order for R70k, then it's worth it, but be very careful to make sure you know exactly how bad that rust is, as there just aren't any shortcuts when it comes to sorting that out.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

Jip, agree, but for me personally the Terracan will do the job. Terracan reviews and owner feedback is always excellent. Can get a super clean one (140K km, FSH with agents, loaded with just about every extra imaginable) for 90K. But the Patrol is 1st prize, Terracan is plan B.

Quote from one panel shop was 8K. The one sides roof rail front to back is pretty vrot, but the rest of the body is actually very good (one dent, no scratches, etc). Motor is clean, 235000km. Apparently radiator damaged on a trip 2 years ago and overheated, so engine overhaul plus gearbox done (haven't seen invoices, but they're available). Major service in April this year. Phoned workshop and they checked file, no problems at all. I couldn't see anything out of the ordinary.
