Re: 4.8 fuel consumption
During December/January I did a 6000km trip with this same vehicle. 4200km towing a Jurgens Exclusive caravan. The rest on West coast sand and Kgalagadi roads. Average consumption over the 6000km 21.7l/100km or 4.6km/l.
"Normal" consumption without towing is as Noel reported earlier - depends on the weight of your right foot.

Re: 4.8 fuel consumption
What do you reckon the loaded weight of the caravan was ? I expect that its probably not bad given what you were pulling.

Re: 4.8 fuel consumption
Very close to two tons. However, it is more the wind resistance that plays a role. With the wind from the front you nearly see the fuel gauge drop. On the way back from Kgalagadi I had the wind slightly from behind and got more than 5km/l on more than one tank.

Re: 4.8 fuel consumption
I have a 3.0 Tdi with 265/70 x 17 Muds and I have a RTT fitted as well as a 60lt water tank, also on the roof fitted to a roof rack in front of the RTT. The vehicle is normally quite loaded, with the rear full, with the drawer system, 90lt National Luna, 2 x Deep Cycle batteries (one in the engine bay, one above the left wheel arch in the rear) and yet another 60lt tank with water just behind the rear seats and four ammo boxes with clothes and food, tins, fresh produce and non-perishables like rusks, biscuits, cold drinks and a bit of "other" refreshments like beers and medicinal Gin and Tonic (for staving off the mosquitoes, keeping me Malaria free, you know....)
My best fuel consumption involved slow driving in Etosha. I filled up in Grootfontein and 748km later, I next filled up in Opuwo, taking in 80.8lt. THAT WAS ON ONLY THE MAIN TANK, and I still had the Sub-tank left on full .
That was my best ever at 9.25 km/lt or 10.8lt/100km. I was really chuffed.
The worst I ever got was on that same trip to Namibia, it involved a lot of mud and low range driving, bad stone in a 5km long riverbed, (taking 4 hours to do the 5km). Once we got out of there, I had to put the hammer down to get to our destination by 7pm, just after dark. That fuel consumption was 16.72lt/100 or 5.99 km/lt
I use this vehicle purely for my Safari Touring business, so the RTT and water tank stays on the roof and it is always loaded to the hilt. The only other times it gets a run is to get serviced or to have something fitted and maybe 2 or 3 times a year when we as a family go camping, and then I tow the offroad trailer as well.
The average fuel consumption over the vehicle's life with me is 13.2lt/100km (7.6km/lt) but on the average trip on the open road and on dirt road or dirt spoor type routes is hardly more than 13lt per 100km (hardly ever less than 7.7 km/lt).
I have just recently had the turbo refurbished, new injectors fitted (big bucks!!), a 76mm pipe fitted from the turbo outlet to the tail-piece (R3500 TNT Germiston), a bigger intercooler fitted (Chris from Cirrus needed a donor vehicle to develop a kit for the 3.0 Di Y61, so I got it as a "gift"). After this I took it for a decent tune-up. I have not filled up since the new injectors and the tune-up, but it will be quite bad figures, I think more than 20lt/100, as it involved a lot of testing and standing idling for hours while adjustments were being done and tests were being performed...
I can't wait to see the new figures....
These stats mentioned I pulled from my Fuelly.com records

Re: 4.8 fuel consumption
I know this is an old thread , but. Does anyone know how much fuel the 4.8 consumes while idling ? If you take the river trip , theirs is a lot of stop and starts. And sometimes a delay. Now I know the 4.8 gulps a whole mouthful of fuel on start up, so is it not more economical to let it idle if the stop is not too long?
