Re: LS2, 1UZ or TD42T engine conversion
My unpopular opinion:
Electronics are the main reason for the improvements in engine performance seen over the last three decades. But they are also the bug-bear of engine transplants, and the thing that causes the most problems on conversions.
My feeling is, if you want to turn that GQ into a good general off-roader with reasonable freeway performance, turbo the existing motor.
If you want a dune monster, stick in a well-tuned old-school small-block V8.

Re: LS2, 1UZ or TD42T engine conversion
I'm not for or against any of the options, but just for interest sake - I am busy with a project that I've decided to use a 1uz fe (vvti) motor. It's not a conversion so it doesn't have the headaches associated with it. The motor I bought came already wired completely, with its original Lexus ECU and a fuse box with relays that sorts out the motor and gearbox. To get it running was super easy. That doesn't mean it won't have issues, but at least it all OEM and not aftermarket parts

Hoe "moeilik" sal dit wees om n 4.5 of 4.8 in 4.2 bakkie te sit?Tinus lotz wrote: ↑30 Mar 2016 16:05

Ek het myne so gekoop. Sal dit nooit self doen, of laat doen nie.

Re: LS2, 1UZ or TD42T engine conversion

Re: LS2, 1UZ or TD42T engine conversion
I suspect the 4.5 petrol is the one Nissan Patrol engine that has historically been the most reliable.
When a 4.2 diesel is set up correctly it seems to have all the torque in a heavy vehicle without the consumption of the petrol engine.
But the 4.5, and other petrol models in general, are much more forgiving if neglected.
That for one makes me prepared to pay the premium at the fuel station.

Re: LS2, 1UZ or TD42T engine conversion
What about a 2UZ motor (4.7 V8) rather... not difficult to get, and ridiculously reliable, and very smooth and powerful.
Johan Meyer (owner/ mechanic at JB's in CT)...commented that when people ask him abut the issues regarding this motor,.. his response is that he doesn't know... because in all his years of Toyota land cruiser motor rebuilds, repairs, diagnosis etc....he's never ever had to open one. ......ever.
They were used in all the Lexus models, as well as the Land Cruiser Cignus (it's like the 100VX, but with more fruit).
I'ver personally driven one and it is phenomenal.
