Hi David

I know it was 10 years of service, but what was the mileage on the 4.8 before the radiator went?
I am just curious about the likely life span of it.

Life can be shortened if there is a small leak somewhere, and when required to refill the water often, means more likely rust etc.

Alex hy het nou 172 542 km op en die boonste plastiek tenk het gekraak net bokant die aluminium. Jy kan sien hoe ek hom gelap het met Pratley Steel Putty

I actually try to keep it well maintained with the correct ratio of antifreeze and only topped up with Castrol pre-mixed antifreeze. Must say I was surprised when I saw how dirty the exterior was compared to new as I blasted it every now and then with the high pressure sprayer. I didn't see any rust.

David just a quick question,is your exhaust still standard ?
when guys (or girls) fit branches on the under bonnet heat rises by a reasonable amount and that constant excessive heat starts to harden plastics . that rubber seal between radiator tank and core gets brittle
and then stars to leak
Also the two black vacuum tanks for clutch and diff locks .the also cracks and you end up with misfires and hard clutch pedal etc :mytwocents: :mytwocents:

Big silencer replaced with a free flow box but no branches. Even standard it gets quite hot under a 4.8's hood.
I also initially thought it was the seal between plastic and aluminum that went but it was actually the plastic that cracked just above the lip that gets crimped.

Hardest work was removing the bashplate - the rest is just pop out old and pop in new...and remembering where the bleed screw is when refilling with antifreeze

If anybody needs a radiator for a 4.8 I can recommend Tombo Automotive - billyc@tombo.co.za
Well done on finding such a good replacement, Nissan are over the top on pricing!

Now I know where to go if it ever happens to mine
