2012/3/4/5 Patrol Diesel - Yes or No??

Post by petri oosthuizen »

I have tried to search, but I do'nt really find anything helpful, only on the earlier engines.

I'm sort of in the market and mood for a Patrol, was looking at the 4800, and still am.

But some people reckon that the newer 3,o TDi engine is good, as in good enough for a Patrol.

Now let me be honest.......I've been selling cars all my life, and the one engine that I really REALLY stay away from is a turbo 2,7D and a 3,0 TD Nissan engine. Granted, the older ones. Quite frankly, I skrikked so much with those, that I have no idea how the newer 3,0 TD is.

Yay or Nay??

Look at a Diesel Patrol, 2012 + model, or just follow my gut and stay away from them and still get a Petrol??

HONEST opinions please guys.

Petri, everybody here will tell you that I am a confirmed petrol-head.

On the other hand, I have been on this forum for a number of years, and know of lots of 3l diesel engines expiring gloriously. Having said that, I don't know of a single common-rail engine expiring.

They will "hold their gear" better than the 4.8, but on the other hand, they definitely don't have the all-out power, and nor do they have the true bottom end of the bigger engines (whether petrol or diesel). Once the turbo spools up, they have lots of torque though.

To be honest, if I was ever to go for a diesel, I would look for a nice 4.2. But that's unlikely. Very unlikely.

So what you guys are telling me is I should'nt be that worried about reliability, but rather whether the Diesel's characteristics will suit me?? VERY true, thanks!!
Piet, ja - I always loved the big Diesel's chugging ability, like the 4,2 1HZ Cruiser one.
I also like slow 4x4 work - I'm never one for revving a thing up a dune or through a mud pit, but rather crawling over rocks and stuff.
Think I'll ask Dicky if I can take that Diesel to the farmpie and back, and get the feel for it.
At the end of the day though, I'm pretty sure it's gonna be the GRX Petrol, though..........just want to make very very very sure that's what will work for me.

Something came up. I'm driving a super clean, nice Cruiser EFI GX at the moment. Then this came looking for me:

2012 GL Diesel, 34000km, never offroad, good as new. Old school pal of mine's pal.

What cruising speed do you manage with the Diesel?? Can it hold +- 120 on inclines, or do you gear down often??

What is your RPM +- at 120??

Does the Diesel work as occasional tow vehicle, say a 1000kg Bush Lapa behind you??

Thanks, appreciated.

The GX is VERY nice, i enjoy that car. But heavy heavy heavy on juice. I think this Diesel would be a nice allrounder and more of a daily drive.

Does anyone have experience with the newer 3.0l towing heavy vans?

I spoke to the owner of a 3.0 a while back and he was very happy with it and said it had loads of poke.
