TB48 oil changes
So my Patrol is in the workshop for it's 80k kms major service, which is covered by a service contract, and this is the last service under the contract.
The dealer here insists on 5000km oil & filter changes in order to maintain the warranty. My warranty will expire in August 2015, so about 4 months, I suspect my next oil change due on the current 20W-50 will be due just around the time the warranty expires, and I can change 2 criteria which will benefit me.
I would like to change the grade of oil to 5W-40, the owners manual recommends a 5W-30, but 5W-40 is available easily everywhere. Secondly with the better grade oil, I hope I can change the oil/filter at 10,000kms .
Although I have heard from patrol4x4.com where a Kuwaiti customer of brand new 4.8 started using fully synthetic 5w-40 and had to have the car changed as there was permanent damage to lifters, noticed from lifter noise, even changing oil to 20W-50 did not reduce or remove the lifter noise. The dealer had to change the vehicle as they are the ones that allowed for the change in oil interval and grade.
What do most of the 4.8 owners here use, and what is your filter/oil intervals. 5w-40 is double the price of 20W-50, so no real saving in increasing the intervals, but less time spent in changes, but if I had to change, then I will in order to preserve reliability of the engine.

Re: TB48 oil changes
Hi David,
I think you have the maintenance schedule for Europe there. I am looking at supplement VI (2002) and schedule for rest of the world except Europe. The intervals are 10,000kms. Although the service manual does not recommend a particular grade of oil, but the owners manual does say 5w-30 for sure. Although I just noticed your location, Stellenbosch, and perhaps the weather is similar to Europe, but not as a cold. Great place you stay by the way.
Just talked to my friend who is a Patrol specialist here, and he recommends that 20W-50 every 3000kms, 10w-40 5000kms and 5w-40 every 10,000kms .

Re: TB48 oil changes
Yes it's the European & South African schedule! I forgot you are in the land of sand
Personally I think the full synthetic is overkill for a non turbo car and the milage between services can be extended (depending on your driving style).
Best will be to have the oil analyzed after 10k, 12.5k and 15k

Re: TB48 oil changes
Hi David,
we don't have a oil analysis service here! Only heard one place that packages oils that has a lab, but not sure on the results they will give, as they had no recommended list of test to do for older engines's oil.
Anyhow.

I've always used Magnetic but moved to Helix HX7 (think 10w40), Don't want to start a flame war but have had some sludge experience with Castorl GTX.

Re: TB48 oil changes
Hi pdasilva
Following up on last reply. Did you change to Shell HX7 and any feedback?
I'm planning to service my Patrol in December (95 000km) and want to decide on oil to use. I prefer fully synthetic. Just need to decide on oil grade and make and stick to it. I'll service every 15 000km as I only drive Friday's and weekends
Seems like options are
Shell HX7 10w40 or
Castrol Edge 10w60 fully synthetic
