Re: Power Valve Actuator (PVA) Mod
Hi guys,
Okay did the mod this morning! Wowwww!!! About a km from my house there's a steepish mountain tar road which I always climb in 3rd gear, today climbed it in 4th with no struggle from the machine. Pressing the accelerator made the revs increase, rather than it kicking down a gear. I also had two wheelspins (on gravel thankfully...) by accident. (!?)
Anyway the mod was super easy to do and took about 10 mins. I did disconnect the cable, taped it up with insulation tape and cable tied it onto another cable running past.
Happy! Will fill with juice tomorrow and check consumption figures on next tank.
I couldn't find any decent photos showing exactly where the PVA sits. So for the not-so-sure, here goes a description:
The PVA sits almost on the centre top of the engine, basically where the engine cover sits, there in the middle. Looking from the front of the engine bay, there are two intakes coming into the top from the right, the PVA sits between the two. Easiest seen from the right side (looking from thre front still), but easiest accessed from the front, half lying over the bulbar and resting your bierpens on the radiator.
The cable to be unplugged sits just behind the second intake, i.e looking from the front, the two intakes sit one behind the other. The plug is just behind (on the firewall side) of the back one. You will see it plugs into a housing with a hose coming out the top of it.
Glad I did this mod! Sheesh, easy tiger!

Again -- does anybody with more tech savvy than me tell me -- Would the V6 Prado also have such a valve thingy or is it unique toe the Datsuns ??

Very few cars have a variable-length inlet manifold. The only ones I know of are some Audis.
Mag ons ons kenniskry met lekkerkry aanhoukry.

Re: Power Valve Actuator (PVA) Mod
Okay guys have done about 250km with the mod done, and no problems. Loads of torque, too much actually, will have to revert the mod when going of road otherwise im gonna spin the tyres all the time. Very responsive, tyres groan and wanna spin at the robots. Very tempting!! Anyway it seems at this stage that the troll is running heavier on juice than before the mod, have done more town driving on this tank but not that much, maybe 30km. Will monitor and post :)

Re: Power Valve Actuator (PVA) Mod
Only way to be sure about fuel consumption is to measure in as controlled way as possible. Town driving has too many things that could influence it and everytime you drive through town will be different stop starts, accellerate etc.
To compare apples with apples, rather take a steady stint on the highway at a as steady speed as possible and measure over say 100km's or more.

Re: Power Valve Actuator (PVA) Mod
After speaking to my mechanic, which is Graham, decided not to do the mod.

Re: Power Valve Actuator (PVA) Mod
Chris,
I am not going to go into detail with this, as I am not a Mechanic.
In short, which is what I thought originally, Nissan Engineers must have had good reason to fit this.
If you go ahead you have the chance off having the little screw come loose and being sucked through the engine from what I understand it happened to someone already.
At altitude not good to have the mod, I cant remember the whole explanation so not going to thumb suck!
When you at cruising speed apparently, the valve will close causing the air to circulate nicely inside, causing cooler running etc. Sorry if I understood wrongly. (But this is how I understood it)
Everything else that followed I just did not hear as I there and then just decided to not do the mod and lost interest.
