what engine oil to use for 4.5 Patrol

Hi,

I am planning to change my oil and oil filter on my petrol 4.5l soon and am wondering what the best oil and oil filter to use? Furthermore, what is the best way to dispose of the oil once you drain it?

Thanks

Hi Daniel
The filter is a GUD Z226 available for about R80 at Midas. The oil grade is shown in the Owners Manual. I have just put Castrol Magnatec 10W40 in my van - seems to be fine!
I normally collext my oil in a 25ltr drum and when full take it off to any car servicing place, they normally have no problem addding to their stock which is normally sent for recycling (hopefully - and not poured down the drain!).
Cheers

Daniel all the municipal dumps in my area now have oil receptacles.

I have been unable to find good synthetic oil with the correct viscosity rating of 20W50, so I am using Shell Helix HX7 (the blue bottle), which is a full synthetic oil with a viscosity of 10W40. My reasoning is that synthetic oil is said to have a more stable viscosity (in other words it doesn't become thinner as it heats up quite as much as mineral oils) and should provide slightly better lubrication at startup, but I am open to correction here.

I only use Mobil 1 0W-40 full synthetic which might be a bit overkill for a non turbo car

I currently use Shell Helix HX-5 in my 4.8, i have heard stories about Castol and sludge build-up, but cannot comment on that. I agree with the Shell Helix HX7 that Peter uses, haven't used it in the Patrol yet, but it did absolute wonders to the noisy Hydraulic lifters on my previous Colt 3l V6. They made serious noise some mornings when i started the car, but after I changed to HX7, the noise was a thing of the past until the day I sold it to buy the Patrol.

Jacques I have heard the same about Castrol, but I am pretty sure that they have fixed that problem by now. The link david posted has some interesting info on sludge as well.

I use Castrol Magnatec in my other car. This is a Birkin 7, a small sports car I use for the odd spin and sometimes a track day or so, which is fitted with a Toyota 1600 20V motor. The reason I use it there is because it does a lot of short trips and therefore tends to have to operate with the oil fairly cold.

Mobil 1 would be better, but the price of that stuff sticks in my craw.

As far as I know it was just the original Castrol GTX that had a bit of a reputation for generating sludge.

The best you can afford...

First choice: fully synthetic
Second choice: part synthetic
last place: Mineral

...but even last place is not bad as long as you change your oil regularly and stick to the known brands

If it was turbo charged then there would be only one choice : Full synthetic :mytwocents:

Die Z226 is darem verskriklik klein. Hoe groot is nissan se filter vir die 4.5?
