This discussion has been verry interesting to follow. My Navara does not have any problems since I fitted the replacement bumper.
You have the petrol or diesel?

I see that this is a very old thread but perhaps still worth adding to. I finally took my 4.8 GRX to Graham (G-tech) to have the ARB bulbar which I purchased from Picasso more than a year ago (in fact I think about 18 months ago) fitted, together with a dual battery system, proper tow bar and so forth.

I discussed with Graham the possibility of adding spotlights to the bulbar and his advice was to not do so because the spotlights detract significantly from the airflow across the radiator; moreover the ARB bulbar reduces the airflow considerably as compared to the original OEM setup (which includes large apertures on the underside).

It is clear to me from my discussion with Graham that he knows an enormous amount about the Patrols and so I am going to follow his advice.

Yes on the diesels but not so much on the 4.8 ....
It has a very tall radiator most of it is below the bullbar ...make sure the rubber on the sides are in place there by the shocks those make a big difference

Thanks Tinus. Yes, the rubbers on my car are all still there...or at least so I think! Will check when I get it back.

I read something on the Aussie forums about a deflector plate but couldn't find any pictures.

I had a Ironman bullbar with winch on my 3.0CRD. I ran a madman. And I had no issues with temps on the engine. :mytwocents:

I have done quite a bit of testing with Madmans and I can guarantee you a aftermarket bumper reduces the airflow over the radiator. I have seen temps of 10 deg and more when fitting an aftermarket bumper and 7 deg higher engine temps with just fitting sporlights in front of the grille.
The rubber mats in the wheel wells also made about a 5 deg difference.

I think on the TD42's this factor is more noticable as they run a bit hotter than the patrols

Michael, please elaborate on the rubber mats. Are you referring to what I think of as mud shields behind the wheels?

Or maybe the "mat" / cover separating the front wheel from the engine bay? if so, is it cooler when they are not present?

Ok sorry, think I understood the question wrong.
These mats are sitting inside the wheel well basically keeping splash from the engine
