Cedric, why so fanatic about this diesel thing?
Besides consumption, which in my case is a margnal thing, and different rev ranges, what else would make you so very very excited? You still don't make 200kw, even with Michael's or Tour de Frans's magic
En Tinus, hoekom is die enjin so verniel? Was dit 'n mynbakkie?
Wat is jou planne met hom, gaan dit 'n werksbakkie word?
Yes Cedric tell us!!
Well Alex, just to tell you why I love the diesels is pretty simple. I love the sound of a 6cyl diesel engine...... it just puts a smile on my face when I drive my Patrol.
Secondly its not about chasing 200kw or big numbers, but it is about the torque it makes and how the TD42 is more efficient when you start working them. Worst consumption I ever got was 6km/l when touring through Namibia (4.5 ton including the trailer I towed)
Also the low end torque is very good on the TD42, I can do obstacles without even touching the accelerator.
These engine really can run even when they are in very poor condition.
Lastly, its just personal preference for me....Im a diesel man and thats the main reason.
Well in a nutshell, Michael summed it up perfectly. To expand on what Michael said ....
These engine really can run even when they are in very poor condition..... Show me any other motor that one can drive 500Km from Botswana to Alberton with a blown engine ( hole burnt through the no 2 piston ) !!!
Reliability, if well maintained, is unbelievable on a TD42. I would go as far as saying even with an aftermarket turbo, again if well maintained and all the necessary gauges etc fitted, this motor is Africa proof strong. You can chuck any type or quality diesel into these things and they will still run ( I will always add a bit of 2 stroke to any diesel bought outside South Africa to ensure the lubrication is still there when the dodgy fuel suppliers add excess paraffin to their diesel tanks).
Would I take any other type of motor up into Africa..... nope. I have no ECU's to worry about, I have no leaded or unleaded petrol worries, I get better fuel consumption, in 4L my fuel consumption is also better, I can and have reached speeds of 170Km/h on the speedo ( on flat tarmac incase someone was going to comment ) and I'm happy to travel at 120 -130Km\h.
Can I tow a great big boat like Jouster?... Yes I can... Will it tow it as well as his 4.8?..... Probably not, I have never towed something that big with my 4.2, but my kitted out Beraka camping trailer tows just fine and yes on the long uphills, I believe that the 4.8 will eat it up, where as we need to watch the EGT temps. I think I will tow Jousters big boat just fine. I definitively will take a bit longer to get there, but I think I will use less fuel.
So yes, each to their own. Don't get me wrong..... I love the 4.8.... I love the sound of the V8 in Alex's patrol, I would probably kiss the ground the day someone fits a Nissan V8 (Cummings) diesel motor into a Patrol !!!!
But as much as you petrol heads give me kak about the diesel smoke and koolstoof, so do we give you kak about the Petrols. but at least we ALL drive the best underated 4x4 vehicle .... Nissan Patrol !!
