Re: My Patrol Pickup thread...
I agree with peter I also noticed lsd isnt worth that much and I know Ive put the correct oil in. Its ok for loose sand and gravel but wheels in the air across from each other not good, you'd need some momentum on obstacles like that. The wagons I must admit are quite a bit more capable than the pickups well they make things a little easier.

Re: My Patrol Pickup thread...
Incorrect oil at time of service by Nissan or previous owner is very likely. This can be rectified tho, by flushing with LSD oil and/or small quantities of engine flush, repeatedly draining and filling until the LSD oil with friction modifiers begin to work well again with the clutch plates in the LSD.SJC wrote:At the river trip, i suspected that my limited slip diff is not working the way it should. So i tested it yesterday.
Jacked both rear wheels up, engaged 4LR, put in 5th gear and turned one rear wheel forward, opposite wheel turned backwards... Does this mean that the LSD is not working?
Is it possible that incorrect diff oil and not proper lsd diff oil, can cause a LSD to not function properly?
Nissan Patrol LSD is regarded to be the best out there, far better than the cruiser equivalent (read: certain 79 / 80 series), but will never be a locker,as it functions differently . The LSD needs low friction on the spinning side to activate the clutch ramp. These can be shimmed though to be more aggressive and come in quicker with less-to-no friction on the spinning side . The pay off for that will be possible squeaks during tight turns in a parking lot for example.
The Auzzies seem to be very divided into 2 camps. 1 Camp loving the Shimmed LSD for seemless operation, ease of driving, and never having to think about it. The other camp loving the Locker.
To test your LSD is operational just park on a gravel road, rev it up, drop the clutch and if you get 2 exact stripes for a good few meters then its working. However, you can still service this item, clean it, add new oil, or re-shimm it to get it working way way better.

Came across this thread: http://patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=1075
Very insigtfull.
"You could also jack one wheel up using a bottle jack and try driving off the jack, as suggested earlier, but this does not quantify the condition of the LSD. It does not take much to drive off jack, so even a pretty worn LSD should do it. Perhaps you could place a brick in front of the wheel on the ground to add some resistance and see if the LSD allows you to drive off the jack while climbing over the brick?"
So is this true or not?

Re: My Patrol Pickup thread...
...anyway. I think in any case the long term solution would be to fit an aftermarket locker, eg ARB.

Installed window smah & grab today. 35% side windows & 20% on rear window. Cartrack got a 50% discount promo running for the month of October, it cost me only 500 bucks.
1. Install madman (egt + oil pressure) - already have the unit and senders.
2. Snorkel.
3. Turbo boost gauge. (Still looking for one)...
