Post by Sweetlips »

good day Gents

I would just like to get your opinion on the 2005+ 3.0 Diesel's. How are there performance, fuel consumption, dune driving capability, etc.
Life's a journey, enjoy the ride!!!

2005 to early 2013 (DiD)
Performance - Okay
Consumption - Good
Dunes - Bad

2013 + (CRD)
Performance - Better
Consumption - Same
Dunes - Better (I havn't seen, but I suspect it will be a bit better than direct injection models).

In terms of reliability though, I would personally consider the DiD models.
But rather go with the opinions of those who actually drive those particular models (or otherwise used to drive them, rather than people who have never owned them...)

Sweetlips !!!.... Holy smoke, where you been bud ???, long time no see !!

Pretty much what Alex has said, If it has been looked after they are pretty damn good. Yeah the older ZD30 Motors in the Patrols were a bit dodgy to start with, but there are quite a few with high mileage on and still going strong !, but they have also had them for a while and serviced religiously.,,,, and they have EGT gauges in, as that is really the only way one will know if one is pushing the boundaries of gas temps reaching critical levels. But Frans ( tour de Frans ) is nearby you and I'm sure will be able to check out the vehicle for you too.

Good to see you back here again !!

Thanks Alex and Cedric

Cedric i have been stalking the all the time now but im getting to the point where i might be able to purchase my dream. Still deciding on the 4.8 (where my heart is) and the 3.0.

I know what im going to say next I might get nailed for but i need to weigh up fuel consumption and i know that is not open for discussion with the 4.5 or 4.8 lol.

Again thanks for the responses thus far.

hahaha.... I hear you bud.

But for Atlantis, you really need the petrol. 4.8 vs 4.5?? I'd push the limit and go 4.8 for sure. If you were up by my side of the world, then definitively a diesel, cause the diesels don't really do dune sand that well, but we eat rocks for breakfast !!

Tread with Care. I have had endless trouble with my 2005 Hand Grenade. Has bigger cooler, egt, etc, still keeps breaking.
I have lost count of how many rebuilds I have done, in and out of warranty.
Transplant imminent.

I was under the impression the 2005+ models solved the hand grenade issues.

Some say the 2005 and newer are better, but there was allot of things changed between the old and newer DI engine.
Some get really good life out of their 3.0, but the real winner is the CRD engine which I have not heard any engine failures of.

Just for interest sake, all the zd30 engines are Direct Injection (DI) engines. Not sure why the first ones were called DI and the current one not. The current zd30 has a CRD (common rail diesel) injection system which is the best diesel injection system.

I still say look for 2006 and later, with the amount of Patrols sold locally a registered 2005 can easily still be a 2004 model
