SERVICE BY G-TECH

Post by Jorrie »

Graham Cumming (G-TECH in Valhalla) serviced my Troll and fitted a snorkel to it yesterday. He really went the extra mile and did a very good job for a very good price.
Well done Graham.

Peter / Tinus

What I am interested in, and I think I can speak for a lot of people, is a one stop place where all forms of pre-emptive checks and servicing can be done.
E.g. Re-greasing of the prop shafts universals, re-oiling of all gears, checking for wear on all bearings, universals, I do not even know what else may need to be checked.
I don't believe that one should necessarily have to fix everything in the bush.
Rather before I go on a long overland, I want to have the confidence of the best possible chance of coming back without a breakdown.

Can Greame do that?

Alex, I doubt that anybody anywhere could check everything that could possibly go wrong. And furthermore, to attempt to do so would probably be exhorbitantly expensive.

I believe the best way to achieve the result you seek is to religiously follow the specified maintenance schedule in the Nissan workshop manual and to do so as specified for the most severe operating conditions, but even then things can still go wrong.

For one example, Grant follows this procedure (and more), and over-all his car seems to be reasonably trouble-free, and as far as I know the only failures he has had on overlanding trips have been with add-on equipment.

The only way to predict whether a Birfield joint will last another 5000 km, would be to strip it, clean it, inspect it and rebuild it. Probably a day's labour in there. To check the radiator hoses would also require the same approach, not forgetting all the small hoses that feed the heater and intake manifold heating system. And then replace the coolant.
And those are just two relatively small systems...

So, to answer your question, I do believe Graham can do this, but by the time you have done three trips it would probably have been cheaper to buy a new car, and thus I believe it is better to just do proper maintenance.
