Servicing a GU TD42

Post by davejones »

Gents

I would like to service my diesel, its been 12 months / 5,700km since the last service.

For now I want to change the engine oil, replace the oil filters and fuel filter. Later will be radiator/cooling system (water looking a bit dirty).

Is there a particular oil i should be using (and why), and does anyone know the correct part numbers for the filters?

Cheers

David

Thanks Koos

What is the best oil to use for the TD42?

Reading a lot on the aussie forum, not sure what is available and suitable locally?

Dave, there are many good oils and people often tend to be fanatical followers of a particular brand.

I have had good results in my Pajero DiD with Caltex Delo 400 as well as with Mobil Delvac. By good results I mean that I have used those products over at least the last 125000 km (first Delvac, then Delo 400 for a while and then back to Delvac) and have enjoyed a smooth running, quiet motor that seams very healthy and nowhere near the end of its life at 200000 km. I know this is not super scientific. I know of many other Delo 400 followers.

I use Caltex Delo 400 as well because it makes the engine run smoothly and pretty quietly (for a 4.2 diesel forklift motor). I've tried a few different oils and Delo seems to be the "smoothest". I change oil every 5000km's though...so probably not a very good representative sample.

There are two different lengths of oil filter for the TD42 (for both GUD and FRAM), I use the long FRAM one which has the part number PH2850. I can't remember the fuel filter part # offhand....but I can have a look if you want? Remember that you will have to prime the fuel filter once it's been replaced.

Ja...add another vote for Delo 400....a very good oil. If I can`t find Delo 400, then Mobil Delvac MX is also decent.

@Frans: The Fram PH2850 is the same length as a GUD Z292. I was given the shorter ones accidentally once, but I can`t recall the part number. I figure bigger is better, so didn`t use them I exchanged them for the longer ones.

Frans,

The part number I quoted is for the long ones. I feel the same as ross...I prefer the idea of a big filter (more surface area for the filter) and it's also easier to get hold of to put in and take out! I also got given the shorter one initially.

Ended up servicing on Friday as on Thursday evening, after seeing Russ's Patrol in the snow, decided I was going to the Drakensburg.

Replaced oil and filters, used Delo 400 and GUD Z292 filters (larger than the PH2850).

Replaced diesel filter, GUD188.

I struggled like you cannot believe to the darn filters off :fire: patience was needed in abundance!!

For the diesel filter, ended up taking out the entire mechanism, secured it in a vice, and hammered through a screw driver.... worked like a charm!!

Needless to say, in 5000km if it is that difficult again; ill only have myself to blame !!

Next on the list is cooling system, geabox and diff oils - any advice on these items?

Cheers
