Draft Proposal for Forum Rules

Post by Gerrit Loubser »

Hi all,

I think it would probably be prudent to put together a set of forum rules, so I gave it a go. Please criticize and comment:

Last Edited: 09/06/2009

1. Some Basic Principles:
1.1 Members should respect one another and treat each other with courtesy.
1.2 Members' forum contributions should be aimed at being positive.
1.3 Members should always review their posts carefully before hitting "submit". Think about possible misinterpretations and misunderstandings that could result. Remember that these are much more likely to occur where the medium of communication is written language only and body language or intonation can not be used to aid understanding.
1.4 Don't fly off the handle immediately if something someone posted upsets you; give them the benefit of the doubt for the same reasons mentioned in 1.3 above.
1.5 Always remember that there is a person behind the post and that you might bump into him/her some day.
1.6 The primary language on this forum is English. This is to enable international participation and not to disadvantage any other language. Other languages are allowed in the "Around the Campfire/Om die Kampvuur" section.

2. Some Rules:
2.1 Topics should be supplied with an appropriate and descriptive title to enable easy searching.
2.2 Posts must be made in the appropriate forum area.
2.3 Always use the search function first before posting a question.
2.3 No swearing or profanity.
2.4 No content or links of a sexual nature; this is a family friendly forum.
2.5 No racist content.
2.6 No political content.
2.7 No brand bashing.
2.8 No flaming or abusing of other members.
2.9 No spamming, no chain letters, no pyramid schemes.
2.10 Tread very lightly when submitting content of a religious nature; be tolerant. Forum administrators and moderators will scrutinize these threads particularly carefully. Absolutely no derogatory remarks will be tolerated.
2.11 Do not type in capitals only.
2.12 Do not make excessive use of emoticons, colours or other effects.
2.13 Do not make off-topic posts except in "Round the Campfire", where this rule is relaxed.
2.14 Do not make posts that generate friction between members.
2.15 Do not post any copyrighted material unless you own the copyright or you have written consent from the copyright owner.

Note that the rules above apply to all content, e.g. posts, signatures, avatars and login names.

3. The Administrators/Moderators:
3.1 Administrators and Moderators will ensure that forum housekeeping is done and order is maintained. In order to do this, they will do the following:
3.1.1 Delete posts or entire topics
3.1.2 Move posts or topics to more appropriate areas
3.1.3 Split topics
3.1.4 Lock topics
3.1.5 Request members either in public or in private to edit or delete contributed content partially or completely.
3.1.6 Terminate membership. Before terminating a member's membership, the member will be afforded the opportunity to state his case.
3.1.7 Acts of moderation will be explained in a brief note
3.1.8 Acts of moderation will not be subject to debate

Gerrit, that says it all! Very nicely stated and clear for all to see, without being long-winded.

Agreed :salute:

Thanx for the initiative Gerrit. :salute: I will review in detail and provide comment if and where necessary and hopefully our other members will also comment, especially those with experience on other forums. Two points that come to mind immediately are:

1. Why join the forum/club and who is legible? We need some sort of intro that defines what the forum is about. Whilst it is a forum for Nissan Patrol owners, it is also open to friends with a love for offroading and overlanding. For me, there are 3 main categories:
a. About Nissan Patrols – core focus
b. Trips and travels – secondary
c. Campfire – tertiary
Gerrit maybe you can put the above in more descriptive words? Also see Why Patrol4x4? http://www.patrol4x4.co.za/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=5
2. Maybe slightly OT, but have you guys given thought to the whole forum vs club concept. At this stage we have a Patrol forum, but we are already talking about get togethers and trips. Are we therefore steering towards a club? Who are we? Patrol4x4 club members?

Guys, well written, I think this forum has a lot of potential.
As for the club, I am for it. Not to brand bash or anything, but I do prefer this forum as it deals with Patrols. I am not really interested in the rest of the Nissan vehicles as I don't think they are very good.
I used to own a KTM990, and belonged to the wilddogs forum, but found that most of us went on trips had KTM's. Just nice when you all have something in common.

I am just sitting on the fence as i dont own a Patrol . But like other forums they remain just forums. People all over the world can join and give their input.
It is not a requirement to own a patrol but many other unfortunate people like myself realise this is the closest we can get to owning one.
Members would just have to organise privately to go on trips of their choice.
It would be up to the Patrol owners going on such trip if non Patrol owners would be invited. After all this is a Patrol forum.
I have occasionally gone with Isuzu, LCCSA,and Landrover with my Nissan Hardbody and they couldnt give a damn as long as they could do all what i can do.
We also live in a part of the world with less enthuasists than in OZ and US so we will be interacting with others sooner or later.

I think its up to the owner and moderators of this forum to make the rule. We will abide by it. :oldtimer:

I agree with you Ian.
It is nice to have a site to talk about Patrols. :bravo: :drinkingcheers:

Looks good!

My 2c:

A corollary to "1.3 Members should always review their posts carefully before hitting "submit". Think about possible misinterpretations and misunderstandings that could result. Remember that these are much more likely to occur where the medium of communication is written language only and body language or intonation can not be used to aid understanding.":

1.3.1 Don't fly off the handle at someone's post - give them the benefit of the doubt

1.4 There's a person behind the post who you might bump into one day.

I agree with you guy about the rules!

Regarding the Club - we have a Nissan 4x4 Club of which I am the secretary since the start of the club. What has happened in the past is that the Terrano guys will organize an outing and invite other members to join - not enough Patrols to do the same thing at this stage.

Many thanks for the constructive suggestions regarding forum rules, weskus_surfer. I have reworked the original draft rules to incorporate them.
