Welcome to the Patrol forum !!

Mine is a 99 model TD42 Diesel that i bought with the turbo conversion already done. If you are want speed.... hmmm the N/A TD42 is not going to work, but slap a turbo on that donkey and its a TOTALLY different beast. The 3rd to 4th gear stretch is still a bugger, but the turbo makes the transition a lot better. Your power is up there with the 4.8's and fuel consumption is a bit better, however in saying that, you want fuel efficiency?... then a Patrol is not for you ( Although the 3.0 Patrol is quite something when you consider the weight and size of these vehicles, but that is a whole different discussion ).

I use mine as a daily drive and do the school run in the morning and also only work 7Km from home, so a lot of stop start driving, and i also am not a slow pull away from a robot kind of guy.... I tend to black smoke the petrolheads so they cannot see me and speed past me....hahaha. My fuel consumption on average is about 16-17L/100Km with 33" tyres on. This is quite high, but it is stop/start. On the open road cruising at 120, I can get down to about 12.5L/100Km, again depending on my driving style.

I honestly would not want to have a n/a TD42 for holiday driving... When you need to overtake a truck, you want to either gear down to 4th and do the overtaking move as quick as possible, especially with a head wind... it's not fun.

doing a proper turbo conversion onto a TD42 is probably the best thing you could ever do the a diesel Patrol. Would it be worth spending R50k on that beast..... Oh hell yeah !! but also as long as you want to keep the vehicle for "life", cause it will probably out live us all, they are that strong.

Maybe you can speak to Dustin here on the forum.... He did a turbo conversion to his Patrol if I recall correctly. He is in PE though, but Dustin is a perfectionist of note, and I believe will give you straight up honest info. PM me if you want his contact details.

JamesC wrote: 23 May 2018 11:37 When he initially advertised it, it had drawer systems in the back.
When I asked about the back seats and jumper seats, he said he didn't have it.

A month later, car appeared again, this time ex drawer system and low and behold, seats galore...

So ja...
The jump seats shouldn't be an issue. I had mine in the garage for a couple of months with no interest, eventually managed to give them away.

I'm not too bothered as I'd remove them anyway. He does seem to still have set of drawers which don't interest me much either.

See if you can find an old Cruiser 4.2 pickup for sale in your valley, and take that for a test drive. The engines are very similar in terms of output and delivery, so it will give you a very good idea of how fast this will be.

I own a 2000 GL 4.2D(onkey)

Currently at 813000 km, yes that is correct

I use it daily, weekly, weekends, yearends...still going as on day 1

Yes it is a bit slow compared to Turbo vehicles

Overall fuel consumption 7.8km/l

I love my car.......

If you can get your hands on one, take it home.

I called the local agents here asking for a 300k service kits and breakdown of what should be changed.
Filters and fluids obviously.
Sump Plug.
Front and Rear Pads/Shoes.

Is that all?
I was shock that the pads are over R 2 000 a pair, rear a little more.

What else should be serviced? I'm pretty anal about servicing fluids and filters every 10000kms already.

How are the clutches?

Thanks again Gents

Hi Oscar and welcome to the forum. One thing that has not been mentioned in the posts is rust. I see the truck comes from the Ugu area and its gets quite salty there. I live across the road from the beach in Hibberdene and my previously immaculate Volvo started to show signs of rust within a year of parking in a carport. There are posts relating to rust on the forum. You will need to get under the car with a strong torch and look, especially around the radiator cradle. Otherwise, the 4.2 is the best one for overlanding. Cedric on the forum has a wealth of info and will give you sound advice.

Hi Barry

I'm based in East London so know all about rust. NS1 is my friend!

It does have a little rust on the bottom of the passenger door that I'm aware of. Either the windows rubber are shot or it's been swimming... Will check the foot wells and mounts as well. Thanks for pointing it out.

No need for agents for brake pads

Ferodo makes pads for front - Midas or Autozone should have stock

For the rear I use Mazda Etude (if I remember correctly) front pads, you need to grind off 5mm from one corner
I keep a sample of tho old Nissan genuine rear part and always take it along to the parts shop.
They have catalogues with 1:1 drawings - mix match, find buy install...

This way you could do front and back for just over R2300

Awesome, thanks Rudolf.

Regarding oils. What are the recommended/best (within reason) engine, gearbox and diff oils?

Cheers
