Re: Opinions on 98 Y61 4.2 non turbo

Welcome to the Patrol forum !!
Mine is a 99 model TD42 Diesel that i bought with the turbo conversion already done. If you are want speed.... hmmm the N/A TD42 is not going to work, but slap a turbo on that donkey and its a TOTALLY different beast. The 3rd to 4th gear stretch is still a bugger, but the turbo makes the transition a lot better. Your power is up there with the 4.8's and fuel consumption is a bit better, however in saying that, you want fuel efficiency?... then a Patrol is not for you ( Although the 3.0 Patrol is quite something when you consider the weight and size of these vehicles, but that is a whole different discussion ).
I use mine as a daily drive and do the school run in the morning and also only work 7Km from home, so a lot of stop start driving, and i also am not a slow pull away from a robot kind of guy.... I tend to black smoke the petrolheads so they cannot see me and speed past me....hahaha. My fuel consumption on average is about 16-17L/100Km with 33" tyres on. This is quite high, but it is stop/start. On the open road cruising at 120, I can get down to about 12.5L/100Km, again depending on my driving style.
I honestly would not want to have a n/a TD42 for holiday driving... When you need to overtake a truck, you want to either gear down to 4th and do the overtaking move as quick as possible, especially with a head wind... it's not fun.
doing a proper turbo conversion onto a TD42 is probably the best thing you could ever do the a diesel Patrol. Would it be worth spending R50k on that beast..... Oh hell yeah !! but also as long as you want to keep the vehicle for "life", cause it will probably out live us all, they are that strong.
Maybe you can speak to Dustin here on the forum.... He did a turbo conversion to his Patrol if I recall correctly. He is in PE though, but Dustin is a perfectionist of note, and I believe will give you straight up honest info. PM me if you want his contact details.
