Sounds exactly like mine
There is some epoxy repair on top of the radiator - that 6 gets hot very quickly if you loose some water...

Well I took the 3.0 for a test today ...

They said it just needed a new battery, but it did start straight away this time. I did notice that the radiator cradle was welded to the body. So now I guess it's probably been in a smack. Couldn't have been too bad but not sure why it would have been welded otherwise.

Question on the turbo though. I was expecting a bit of a kick when the turbo kicked in. I intentionally changed up early through the gears and till about 3000rpm it was a slow constant acceleration. Is there no noticeable kick when the turbo comes in?

Last question: Does the diff-lock only engage when in 4wd?

Fanus die probleem is dat almal kan sê wat hulle wil op die interwebs maar dit maak nie jou opinie reg of verkeerd nie....maar kom ons vat nou my bakkie as n voorbeeld .....het hom n a gekoop met gebreekte head en gebreekte blok...het 20000km so gery en toe het micheal met my toesig die engine herbou.....dis nou al 3 jaar en 185000km later en sover het ek n fanbelt gebreek....
Wanneer die turbo reg opgestel en reg beheer word maak dit dat jy n baie meer efektiewe engine het wat werk....mens moet ook na n madman luister en doen wat hy sê...n a breek net so vinnig sonder water as n turbo engine .
Ek dink Micheal se oppienie maak wel baie saak want hy maak al die diesels reg en sien hoe baie stukkende na karre daar uitkom by hom .
Met diesel veral is om te meet meer belangrik as jy wil weet wat aangaan en dis wat jou motor heel hou .Kyk bietjie wat kry die down under mense reg met hulle motors 2 keer wat ons maak en hulle hou ...ek het die week met attie gepraat en sy bakkie het nou al 55000 met 600nm en 175kw op agter wiele en hy ry nog meer as ek asof hy hom gesteel het ...regtig die n a hou omdat die moer wat die stuurwiel vashou fokus en dit is omtrent dit ...dit is my uitkyk oor die saak

Oscar, yes to do a turbo conversion there is quite a number of things to do whe doing it properly.

First thing is to replace the old NA pistons to the correct turbo ones.
I have my own top mount turbo manifolds casted and it is paired up with a brand new Garrett T3 turbo.
Also the old air filter system is removed and replaced with a stainless air box sitting behind the LF headlight.
A Madman EMS system is installed to monitor EGT's and water temps.
Front mount intercooler is recomended when doing this conversion and includes stainless pipework done by Viper.
Diesel pump needs a boost compensator + calibration and injectors need to be checked as well.
While the head is off it should be serviced as well.
Lastly it gets a 76mm stainless freeflow and all this nearly doubles the power and torque output, but its not a cheap excersize.

Every conversion is different, but you are looking at R55,000 and more depending on the condition of the engine, diesel pump, head and injectors.

Starting to feel like the community formum here :think:
My business is not to convince anyone to do a turbo conversion on their Patrol, but to offer this option to better the power delivery.

I have done thousends of hours of research and development on this and its not something I just slapped together.

Although this is my core business I do any TD42 related work so no....... it will not do my business damage, but thanks for your concern. :thumbup:

Ons het Februarie 2017 n '99 4.2TD (Alpine fabrieksturbo?) gekoop met 326 000km op die klok.

Hy staan al op amper 390 000km en ons sal nie maklik weer terugkyk nie.

Brandstofverbruik is 6.5km/l in die Kalahari se sand- en sinkplaatpaaie, 8-8.5km/l gemiddeld en tot 9.1km/l op die lang pad.

Bande is Windforce Catchfors MT: 285/78/16: 1.6bar op die grondpad en 2.6-3.0bar op die teer. Die vorige eienaar het hulle al n rukkie gehad en ek moet nou begin spaar om hulle te vervang.

Madman sisteem by Tinus gekoop en deur Frans in Kaapstad ingesit - hy het ons n oorbou gespaar toe n waterpyp eendag gebars het.

My vrou het grootgeword met Volvo's. Selfs sy se^ intussen dat daar - DV - altyd n Patrol in ons motorhuis sal staan.

Die groen skip is nie vinnig nie, en het n gemaklike togspoed van 110km/u. Daar is genoeg spasie vir alles.

EEN VAN DIE GROOTSTE PLUSPUNTE IS DAT DIE BMW'S NIE MEER LANGS MY VROU INTREK WANNEER SY ALLEEN RY NIE.

Dienste kan ek elke 5000km self doen. Dit werk uit op ongeveer R1500/diens.

IMHO ....
turbo gaan nie die engine se lewe verleng nie ....maar met die regte setup gaan dit nie n verskil maak in ons leeftyd nie ....met die turbo gaan water bietjie warmer wees en egts ook tot n mate ...ek sê weer as mens alles monitor gaan niks breek nie . Die diesels loop teen baie hoer kompressie as die petrols so as iets fout gaan gaan dit groot ...so meet alles en stop voor daar problems is

Die is nou nie juis n baeie oortuigende aanmerking nie, en is gebaseer op?

Wat is "more reliable" 100k km 300k km of meer as dit?

My NA is geturbo op 23k km en staan nou op 435k km dus loop hy al meer as 400k km met n conversion en enjin is nog nie oopgemaak, so as jy dus vir my sou vra sou my antwoord wees die 4.2td is reliable.

Gebaseer op persoonlike ondervinding........... ek dag ek se maar net :mytwocents:

There's a ZD30 Y61 here in East London which I went to look at. They couldn't get it started so didn't hear what it sounded like or bother taking it for a drive. Pretty rough condition.

I might still call them up and try take it again.
The ZD30 motors are a lit quieter than the TD42's. The TD42 is an old school, no electronics motor. Diesel get sprayed into the precom chamber at "relatively" low pressure, a big bang happens and out comes lekker smoke.....hahaha
The Zd30 is controlled by an ECU, with much higher injector pressures. Its new technology vs Td42 VERY old technology ( from around the mid 1980's)
