Re: Engine conversion on Patrol 4.5

Howzit boet,

I have done quite a few conversions now(mostly Lexus, ford V6 & turbo & supercharger mods) & to be brutally honnest...

Unless you have the time & knowledge (mechanical, engineering & electrical/management systems) to do it yourself. It rarely ends up being the cheaper option.

It's the small things that always bite you, like the "glow plug" light on the dash. Exhaust differences, gear ratios etc etc.

Moving from petrol to diesel also may result in cooling issues, even though the 4.5 has a monster radiator.

The 4.5 & 4.2d should swap out pretty easily & gearbox will also mate up, but from my experience of conversions & the downtime & niggles.

It would almost always have been better to sell up & buy a new vehicle with the spec you want.

This is just my opinion & I don't mean to be all doom & gloom.

I am just doing the rough numbers in my head & once you've found & bought a replacement engine & taken the time to fit it... if you added that cost to the price that you could get for a complete 4.5 you may be able to purchase a diesel & not be without a vehicle for the conversion time.

Ask yourself why you want the change? If you want a performance monster then building it is part of the fun & the school fees are part of the process, but if you want reliability a factory vehicle will always be better.

IMHO

Re: My V8

Hi Alex,

I had similar issues with my Lexus (with an engine cover). I too had stuttering & even lost cylinders when water was involved.

My issue was that the spark plug tube & coil pack assembly were not seating properly on the heads, there were circular rubbers that had shrunk with age & water was getting in through the gap.

We fixed this by getting new rubbers & also sealing the faces with a tiny bit of forma-gasket.

I still however from time to time had a cough or two when playing in the water.
