Re: Sub-Fuel Tank - Do I have an Issue?

Hi,

Yes, there are a few conditions that needs to be met before the valve to the main tank will open. It must have enough space in main tank. If the car is at to much of an angle the valve won't open. You can find this info in your manual.

You don't hear any defenit noise to indicate transfer. Al that indicates is the light on the switch. And the transfer is sloww. The first time I used mine I thought it was broken. Then after about 10min. I saw the main tank level responding. It takes a good 30k's driviving to allow enough time for the the sub tank to empty itself.

I got my Patrol this year through NissanSA and it has a sub tank (35liter) main tank (90liter) it has 2 seperate filling places. 2 gauges in the instrument cluster. This is standard on patrol as far as I know.
Problem I'm having is that the car run out of diesel on a qauter tank. At just above qauter she dies. Ad feul and of you go. This wil hopefully be sorted via nissan early in the new year.

Re: Fuel supply failure

Hi Guys,

some feedback on the fuel supply failure. The car was with Nissan from Monday to Wednesday. They got a whole lot of things from Nissan SA that they had to do. like calibrations. checking the clusters and so on. They also drained the tank to confirm the amount of diesel in the car at quarter. I gave it with a tank level just above quarter. they drained 25 liters diesel out of the main tank. so it was safe to say that even though it died at quarter it was never actually empty. well they said they believe it should be fixed and I can come and collect it. Took it for a drive and dump some fuel from the sub tank to the main tank just until it was above quarter where it usually died on me. went to the garage and refilled the sub for standby. (this has become the routine for me. drive the main tank low during fault finding. keep the sub full for emergency.) I drove home and parked the car for the night. no problems. left for work the next morning and whamm it dies again. dumped sum diesel from the sub and primed the fuel line. started the car and drove to work. when got to work the tank was almost half. I phoned the workshop manager and told him it is still doing the same. he said he will phone me back he needs to speak to Nissan SA again. after work I drove home and whamm the car dies again, this time to my amazement because it has never died at the half mark. went through the usual routine. started the car and drove off. however this time the car did not have any power at all. so I crawled home. phoned the works shop manager again. he said I must have the car there Friday morning bright and early.

I got there and they hooked it up to the computer. this time however the mechanic who has helped me the very first time was there again. ( i did not see him around there for some time. apparently he was on training). Good oak, I like him from the first time I saw him. he hooked it to the computer and it threw out errors like diesel pump failure, fuel leak and fuel pressure. so he pulls out his phone and is soon after having a huge discussion with someone on the other side of south Africa. Apparently the guys in cape town see a lot more Patrols then around here. and he spoke to someone he met on the training session they had. this guy suggested that they remove the diesel water filter (i don't know how the system use to work. but mine has a filter in the diesel system for removing water and another filter for removing dirt). Apparently this causes fuel issues. but on patrols with more kilometers on the clock. mine only has 5000km. but he said that they should try it. Bypass the water filter and reset the computer again. The workshop manager then put himself, the workshop foreman and the mechanic on standby for me for the weekend. the mechanic had to go home with the computer and tools. if the car dies again, i was not allowed to start it. they must be phoned and then they will come and plug in the computer so that they could see what happened. so they did that and I took off. with a half full tank. so i decided that i am not going to wait for quarter to come so i drove over a 160 kilometers up and down until the low fuel light eventually came one. ( I told my wife while i was driving up and done purposefully trying to empty the tank. i thought to myself that i'm probably the only idiot in SA trying to drive out fuel. at the current prices everybody is trying to save fuel. :rolling: ) since then i have managed to drive the car empty twice without incident.

so it seems as if this solved the problem. how the filter knew when the car was quarter I don't know  .
the mechanic also reset everything with an older version computer on top of using the latest one. he said that since the car is using old tech it might help. maybe this was the solution.

I DON'T CARE THE CAR IS FIXED AND I AM SO RE-LEAVED. :blonde:
I don't want the water filter back. it seems if these filters are highly sensitive for dirty fuel. this might explain why I had problems from the beginning. I drove from the depot in Durban where they keep the new cars coming of the ships. they filled it there in the depot. maybe the diesel was dirty. cause since i have the car I have never been able to drive it past quarter without it dying on me.

apparently their is a mod that the cape town ouens do. they put in a filter that does both in one. removes water and dirt in one filter. so we will see if this is the route we are going to go. I will keep you posted.

Re: EGR ZD30

Al 2 filters is vervang.

Al2 is ervare manne.

Dit se my 2 dinge.
    so ek wonder steeds. Pls ouens

Oom Mac, my Trol nog onder waarborg. Ek sien dis groot geld as da iets fout gaan. So ek sal ma aan daai waarborg klou so lank ek kan.

Re: EGR ZD30

I read alot of stuff on EGR last night and there is defenitly more advantages blocking it of than not doing it. On diesels. I pasred a piece from wiki that l found might be an adding factor to the ZD30 failure. Acidic oil.

"By feeding the lower oxygen exhaust gas into the intake, diesel EGR systems lower combustion temperature, reducing emissions of NOx. This makes combustion less efficient, compromising economy and power. The normally "dry" intake system of a diesel engine is now subject to fouling from soot, unburned fuel and oil in the EGR bleed, which has little effect on airflow, however, when combined with oil vapor from a PCV system, can cause buildup of sticky tar in the intake manifold and valves. It can also cause problems with components such as swirl flaps, where fitted. Diesel EGR also increases soot production, though this was masked in the US by the simultaneous introduction of diesel particulate filters.[9] EGR systems can also add abrasive contaminants and increase engine oil acidity, which in turn can reduce engine longevity.[10]

Though engine manufacturers have refused to release details of the effect of EGR on fuel economy, the EPA regulations of 2002 that led to the introduction of cooled EGR were associated with a 3% drop in engine efficiency, bucking a trend of a .5% a year increase.[11]"

Environment forced ideas like EGR. To control the EGR they use 2 methods. The VNT turbo and electronic control. The VNT turbo close the vains via vacume thats commanded by the ECU. This reduces turbo pressure to go lower than exhaust pressure, allowing the egr valve to open and letting the recycled exhuast gas in. If you dont reduce the turbo pressure the gas cannot enter because its over powered by the turbo air pressure.
Thought I'd share. :mytwocents:

Kgalagadi & Southern Namibia trip

So after a year of planning and preping the day finally came. On 1 December at 02h30am myself, my wife and our three teenagers set off on our trip that would take us through the northen Cape, Khalahari, Namibia and back through the Northen Cape.

We reached our first overnight destination, Witsand, at around 15h00. After checking in. We went to explore and experience the roaring dunes. Unfortunatly some idiot tried to drive up the dune. How long those marks will be there is difficult to say. The accomodation at witsand is excellent. It was a nice surprise. The place is beautiful. Well worth a visit.

The next morning we left for Upington inroute to Tweerevieren. In Upington we bought food and drink for our 6day stay in the Kgalagadi. I bought meat at the Opi hoek Slaghuis. Very nice and helpfull. We left for Tweerevieren and arrived there just before three. Here we had to go through customs after checking in. We where given a sort of gate pass which we where to hand in at all the camps until we leave the park at Mata-Mata.
what can I say. My 2nd time in the Kgalagadi. The first time was great this time was Super Great. We stayed over at the main camps, mainly because of the swimming pools for the kids.
We had awesome sightings and experiences. The one day around nossob we saw 18 Lions.

Re: Diesel Patrol 90s

I had the previlage to be taken for a ride in Michaels 4.2TD. That thing pulls like mad. He might be a good guy to compare notes with when it comes to the turbo bit. His engine was not a turbo 4.2. He made it a turbo 4.2 With all the correct inners. Those 4.2's are awsome.

Nissan australia service / workshop manuals.

Hi,

I was searching on the internet as to how a patrol diff lock works and I stumbled across this web site. Mungst the refference doc. Their are workshop manual and service manuals.
Unfortunetly you have to install the app to be able to read the manuals, but it works well.

https://www.google.co.za/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&ei=C38tVYugKKTB7gaz1IGoCw&url=https://www.scribd.com/doc/91067506/Nissan-Patrol-ZD30-Y61-Reference-Document-Colour&ved=0CCcQFjAD&usg=AFQjCNGnvbTxIGTLgDTdUeAJWxdobYXsRA&sig2=jYwcz_VE8WcMCVC3r4fy1Q

Maybe it can be of help to someone. The ZD30 manual explained alot of the qeutions I have asked. Especially the difference between the older and latest ZD30 motors.

Re: ZD30-DI changes to ZD30-CRD

Another way to check is. On the crd the intercooler intake pipe is on the passanger side. The outlet is on the driver side. On the di they are both on the passanger side. The tappet cover on the crd is flat and more sqaure. The tappet cover on the di is higher and rounder.
