I would start by listening with a stethoscope or long screwdriver. If the end is held against the gearbox and with the engine running the clutch is stroked, there should be a change in sound. But lets' take the clutch out of play, with clutch out can you and car at idle, can you move it into 1st or R without crunch (should not be able to move into gear at all), if yes- then some spectacular clutch mishap. Bump steer from both wheels moving in the same direction up or down will not be much of a problem as long as the panhard and draglink runs parallel and are of similar length. Thus any movement of the diff left -right and vice versa when hitting a bump will be compensated for as the relative movement...

FYI I took the alternator to the autolec and he said there is nothing wrong with it, I wanted to agree as it spins freely, no noise . 4.8 alternator

Friday I changed all the belts (Except the recent power steering belt). Also changed the AC tensioner bearing, Did a quick trip to the Waterberg . Then on Saturday afternoon on a cold startup had a bit of a racket, sounded like a belt slipping but goes away after about 5 seconds. same Sunday morning...

My 4.8 GL also has the hole and I used a discuss lock, Can only use the discuss lock a with a steel wheel , on a mag you will need a normal padlock. I also cable tie and normally stick a piece of insulation tape over the key hole
