Re: Is tyre life still 5 years on tyres?

Another big factor is whether the car lives in a garage or is subjected to UV radiation. I have certainly noticed that my last three sets of tires really started performing very badly in terms of sustaining damage more easily about 6 years after manufacture. In fact, the Bridgestones i recently thre...

Re: Project Snowy met n turbo

Looking at that I think valve guide or stem seal is a good candidate.

But if you are re-building the engine anyway, perhaps the cause doesn't really matter, since all the possible causes should be receiving attention anyway as part of a proper rebuild?

Re: Patrol porn......

I stand corrected. Much more modified, and much more flex (nearly 50% more) than mine.

The limiting factor usually remains shock length. A higher lift, combined with extended bump stops like he has, gives room for longer shocks. Of course, the lift brings disadvantages too.

I stand humbled.

He's also on Instagram, under the user name "One Tough Patrol".

From what I can gather, the front end setup is similar to what I have now, except that he's got much more lift for the 40" tires.

Re: East Africa Trip 2020

Wat 'n klomp stront. Speak to Walter Gygax (Kalahari Safari here and on SA4x4), who uses Patrols extensively as a tour guide, Malcolm van Coller (same story) and Wilfred Moore, who has done a similar trip in his 4.5. To my mind, all modern vehicles have reasonably similar tech. If he can work on a C...

This is what it looks like, seen from outside.

I am prett6 sure that, at low engine speeds, this hole will ne able to drain water. At higher engine speeds, probably not.

For snow, i have no idea. I avoid the stuff wherever possible.

Re: 2000 4.2d Patrol failing alternator

Surely 14.4v will shorten the life of a crank battery? Which is the reason DC-DC chargers are so popular, because crank batteries need ideally to be run at less than 14v and deep cycles need more than that?

Re: Holes in air boxes

The ZD30 filter housin I examined did not have any one-way-valve arrangement. The pre-filter on the petrol Y60 does have a rubber one-way device like you describe, but the whole is much bigger, probably in the order of 20-25mm. I also feel that if you need to ford that deep for that long you should ...

Holes in air boxes

This comes from a Whatsap group discussion with some friends. The factory air-box from the ZD30 (and probably others as well, i haven't looked) has a 4mm hole in the bottom, outside the filter. The questions are what it's for and what disadvantages it may have, especially regarding fording. My opini...
