Re: low range gears

Cedric, i think something has gotten lost in translation here. I want lower T/C ratios to be able to go slower in extreme rock crawling. Just as you say, idling in first gear. Slow enough to get out and check my line. If you saw the two jeeps going up Koos se Klim this weekend, you will understand j...

Re: low range gears

In fact, i would be inclined to say that the ideal transfer case ratio would be one where 5th low sits between 1st and 2nd high. But then the transfer case should ideally also have synchromesh, at least on high range. And of course, should you ever find enough traction, you would be able to destroy ...

Re: low range gears

Julian, remember that you still have your high range gear ratios in tact. To my mind, if you are expecting to be able to reach 60km/h, you would probably be better off in high range. Even with 3.735:1, you still have a lot of overlap between high and low. Speaking for myself only, I would not be int...

Re: low range gears

Hi Peter I take it on your type of vehicle when referring to sand, are you referring to beach sand, perhaps towing a trailer? What sort of gearing would your vehicle use in standard form to drive up a dune for example? Negative, I am talking about dune driving. Never driven much on beaches, but I h...

Re: low range gears

Here is a very basic little calculator showing the effect of the Mark's 4x4 ratios on a 4.2 GQ (according to the manual, gear and final drive ratios are the same assuming a manual gearbox). Gear ratios.xlsx Now in these cars, 2nd low is the only gear that works for sand. 1st high is too low, and 2nd...

Re: 4x4 propshaft

I only comment when I have specefic knowledge (or a very strong opinion), which, in this case, I don't.

My only recommendation is to use whatever the manufacturer uses. They usually do things for a reason.

Re: 3.0 - V8 conversion

The owner of JR's exhausts in Roodepoort has or had a GQ with an old Yank V8 in it. Unfortunately I have no idea who did the job, or anything else about it. Tommie had a modern Chev V8 in his previous car, tuned to deliver very serious power. He did have some issues with gearbox and rear diff during...

Re: TD42 TDI

In die GU's het die TB42 en TD42 dieselfde ratverhoudings en final drives gebruik.

Ek dink die karakters van die twee bogenoemde enjins is omtrent so eenders as wat 'n diesel en 'n petrol kan wees.

Re: 4x4 propshaft

Cedric, it would do that. But any irregularity in the film thickness is going to cause some vibration,. The manufacturers don't use any grease here, and i reckon that's good enough for me. And in the unlikely event you do get some corrosion in there, it'l just help keep the joint together. :mytwocen...
